'Creamed Possum' is a real thing and it's the strange southern side dish that you never knew about

One of the best ways to learn about other cultures is by dining on their many delicious delicacies. From the Appalachians to the Gulf Coast, the Deep South is world-famous for its food.

Nothing tastes better than a sweet slice of pecan pie, sizzling southern barbecue fresh off the grill, piping hot gumbo, and roadkill right out of a can. Ok, that last one was a joke. And at the same time, it isn’t.

Gag company, Blue Pirate, offers cans of strange meats we wouldn’t normally eat.

Many of their canned goods include raccoon, armadillo, and squirrel. But their best seller happened to be possum meat swimming in a thick coon gravy and garnished with sweet potatoes. Sounds delicious, no?

But before you start gagging, these canned meats are thankfully fake.

The meat that is supposedly inside these cans is organic compost, so you can’t eat from them even if you wanted to. Nevertheless, you can still have a lot of fun with these fake cans.

These meats are the perfect prank gift to give to family and friends after a trip to the Deep South.

You can use these prank cans for April Fool’s day, a White Elephant gift exchange, or maybe you’re feeling a little more naughty than usual. Either way, it’s the perfect prank to use if you don’t want it to end in injury, arrest, or emotional trauma.

You can order your meat of choice online and give them to your victim of choice.

However, if you want to take up another level or just curious about what possum meat tastes like, you can follow real-life recipes online. In a YouTube Video, one southern cook decided to bring this prank recipe to life with all of the key ingredients.

YouTube has no shortage of delicious content. You could spend hours upon hours watching cooks, both amateur and professional bringing countless recipes to the kitchen counter. No doubt it takes a particular set of hands to prepare possum properly.

One southern cook shows how to make creamed possum in real life.

First off, the meat is skinned from a medium-sized possum, seasoned with spices, and placed into a boiling pot for a few hours. Once removed, the flesh is so tender it falls effortlessly from the bone. Possum meat, unlike beef, turkey, or pork, is very greasy and fatty.

Once placed into a tray, a can full of yams and sweet potatoes in syrup tops the meat. Then the cook pops it in the oven for an hour, and it’s ready to eat. And how does possum taste? Well, like a possum.

It’s a required taste that needs all the help it can get. Still, it’s more edible than compost. But if you’d rather keep clear of possum meat as a delicacy, you can at least use it as a prank. Or rather the label of possum meat.
