Remember when it was weird to see someone wearing a face mask in public? In just a few months, the world has become a strange new place.
The things we complained about last year seem so unimportant now. Coronavirus has really put us all in our place.
Luckily, the USA is slowly reopening. But things may never be quite the same again. In the fall, schools will hopefully be back in session. Of course, with the possibility of coronavirus still being a threat, schools will have to make a lot of changes to ensure that children are safe.
1,000s of schools in France are reopening, and the changes they’ve made offer us a glimpse of the measures America is likely to implement.
Class sizes have had to shrink. Pre-school classes consist of a maximum of 10 children, and elementary school classes consist of a maximum of 15 children. Accordingly, desks are further apart in classrooms, helping students socially distance while learning.
But perhaps the most shocking change has happened to playgrounds.
Usually, playgrounds are filled with kids running back and forth, with kids playing games like tag all over the place. But this is what a French playground now looks like:
Kids have to socially distance at playtime by sticking to chalk squares on the playground.
Of course, these measures have been implemented for a very important reason: it will save lives. But it’s hard not to feel sad for the kids who have to spend their recesses confined to squares.
In addition to the above measures, French schools are having to disinfect toys after any child uses them.
In-classroom attendance is not yet mandatory in French schools, meaning that many kids are still learning from home. It’s easy to understand why kids would not want to go to schools like this!
Many parents in France are currently resisting the option of sending their kids into schools.
In fact, surveys of parents in Paris have shown that a majority of those questioned have preferred to keep their kids in the home until the fall school year begins.
Schools in China have also undertaken similarly strict health and safety measures.
Footage has surfaced of children being sprayed with sanitizer before being allowed to enter their school building.
Images have also surfaced of kids in China wearing special social distancing hats.
These have wing-like pieces of cardboard on them, highlighting how far they have to keep from other kids.
Many people have been wondering just how psychologically harmful these distancing measures will be for children. After all, there’s no denying that having constant reminders of the danger you are potentially in must be scary to school kids of any age.
Of course, in the US, this will just make school even scarier than it already was.
For many years now, children have had to be aware of and prepare for the very real threat of school shootings. Schools should be places where kids can feel safe. Instead, they seem to be places filled with danger.
Hopefully, the US can find a way to make schools safer for kids again in the future. Who knows what kind of long term impact coronavirus fears will have on children today?
