Deliveryman’s dogs are home from doggy daycare – so he decides to make them co-workers

Chorizo and Cocoa have been hard at work on the front lines since the coronavirus pandemic hit.

While according to their Instagram page they are “two fun-loving dachshunds” living in Oceanside, California, their fun was put on hold when the doggy daycare they attended three times per week closed down earlier this year as the virus spread.

And like many of us, that means they’re mostly stuck at home.

These days, 2-and-a-half-year-old Chorizo and almost 2-year-old Cocoa’s parents face a common dilemma – what do you do with the “kids” when they have nowhere to go but you have to work all day?

Lucky for Daniel Nava, he had the option of bringing them to work with him.

The FedEx driver now has two furry sidekicks accompanying him on his route.

Now, their ability to go to work with dad wasn’t a given. It’s a potential logistical nightmare – and not exactly in line with company policy. But exceptional times sometimes call for exceptions to the rules.

“The decision to bring them with me on deliveries was not easy but my supervisor is very understanding,” Nava told The Dodo. “Also I had brought them with me before with no safety issues — I have them on a harness that is anchored down to my seat while we drive.”

But even having permission to bring them along and having them tethered to the seat didn’t relieve all of his worry about having the pups with him at work. One never knows how dogs are going to react to all of the different things a delivery driver sees out on a daily route.

But it seems everyone has been well-behaved thus far and Cocoa and Chorizo are loving their new “internships.”

For one, they get to spend all day with dad. But they also get to see lots of new people who are happy to see them.

No doubt it helps that Nava went out of his way to make them look the part – the pups even have their own homemade uniforms!

“I ended up making their outfits out of some old work shirts, and I got them some doggy sunglasses on Amazon,” Nava said.

Since we’re not sure the role that animals play in spreading the virus, the newly-employed pups don’t get to interact too much with customers, but that doesn’t mean people aren’t stoked to get a glimpse of them.

And they’re still getting their exercise as well.

“They seem to enjoy their time on the route — sometimes we stop by at the local neighborhood parks and I let them run around for a little bit,” Nava said.

This isn’t the sweet dachshunds’ first rodeo. They got their first taste of the working life on Christmas Eve last year. Nava told Bored Panda:

“The first time I brought them with me was on Christmas Eve, I don’t remember why they didn’t go to doggy daycare that day but I decided to bring them with me on my deliveries. When their doggy daycare closed due to Covid-19 I started bringing them every day.”

And the attention they get on their route is nothing new. These two have been sharing the limelight on Instagram since they were just puppies and are quickly approaching 5,000 followers.
