Dachshunds hailed as “real heroes” who helped free ship stuck in the Suez Canal
The Suez Canal, which kinks the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea is a major thoroughfare for trade. Providing passage for roughly 12 percent of the world’s trade, about 18,000 ships move through the passage each year. So, when a cargo ship got stuck in the canal, world trade was brought to a halt.
And while the waterway is now clear, thanks to the hard work of many people, some pups are stepping forward to receive their due as the true heroes of the catastrophe.
Crusoe and Oakley to the rescue
Two Dachshunds, named Crusoe and Oakley, took up the challenge of freeing the cargo ship, the Ever Given, when it became stuck in late March 2021. Determined to get the job done, the two small dogs used their special skill set to save the day, at least if you hear them tell it.
Video proof

Proof lies in a video that has been making the round on the internet. In the video, the two make short work of the dirt holding the ship in place. They even took the time to be safe by putting on some special Dachshund-sized hard hats and safety vests before getting to work.
Acting as their translator, the dogs’ human relayed on YouTube what the two had to to say about their efforts:
“The media doesn’t like to give us credit, but it was actually two hardworking little wiener dogs who cleared the Suez Canal and freed the Ever Given container ship to continue on its way.”
Of course, their owner made sure to give them plenty of treats for their efforts. Thanks to the hard work of these two pups, the Suez Canal can now get back to business.
Maintaining a work/life balance

While they are not off saving the world, Crusoe and Oakley like to hang out at their owner’s home. There they play together, along with their owner’s other dogs. It’s as they say, all work and no play make life really dull and boring.
Who really cleared up the Suez Canal
In all honesty, it was thanks to the efforts of a whole host of people that the Ever Given was finally freed, including dredgers and various tugboats. But, after working several days, six to be exact, the Ever Given was soon on its way to a holding area pending an investigation.
It is estimated the blockage cost $400 million in international trade for every hour it blocked the way through the canal. And this is not even counting what it cost the Suez Canal Authority, which is said to have suffered losses of $1 billion.
Always on call
But thanks to the determined Crusoe and Oakley, the world’s trade was able to get back on track. Now they rest peacefully for the day when their services might be called upon again,
