Hero dad suffers severe burns after running into burning home to save twin daughters

On the evening of July 16, Ray Lucas and Shi’Ann Brown, both 23 years old, made a brief trip to the nearby gas station. When they arrived home, their house somehow ended up on fire.

Ray, a man from Eastpointe, Michigan, immediately thought of his 18-month-old twin daughters Malaysia and Milan, whom he shares with Shi’Ann, as soon as he saw their home engulfed in smoke.

The couple were horrified.

“Get the babies,” Ray instructed his niece and mother as they approached the door.

Time was truly gold at that point since he knew his babies were still there, sound asleep in the basement.

He had one goal in mind.

”I just knew I had to get my babies out,” he recalled. “That’s what wen through my mind.”

Ray ran inside the flaming house without any hesitation to save his children. Shi’Ann entered as well but fell over due to her inability to see where she was going. Fortunately, Ray managed to enter using only his memory.

Ray was determined to save his children.

”You really couldn’t see your hand in front of your face. I really only found my babies due to my memory, just knowing where they were and knowing how to get them just from having that same route,” he recounted of the ordeal.

Thankfully, both daughters survived, owing to their father’s valiant efforts. However, they needed to stay in the ICU for a while to heal from their injuries. Milan sustained smoke inhalation and second-degree burns, while Malaysia required medical attention for serious burns.

But Ray suffered the most.

The most serious wounds were sustained by Ray. In addition to smoke inhalation, he suffered second and third degree burns to his face, eyes, neck, arms, and other areas of his body as a result of the electrical fire.

“I was temporarily blind for three days and they said it was a miracle I could see,” he shared. “I’ve got burns on my arms, but for the most part, everyone is still here.”

But the problem doesn’t end there.

Ray worries that he won’t be able to return to work because of how badly hurt he is. Their home was entirely damaged by the fire, and they are still paying off their mounting medical debt.

Ray said that the day before, they had to cope with floods and speculates that the fire may have been caused by it.

They need help.

“These last couple of days have been crazy but I just wanted to thank everybody for their support, whether it was prayers, money, clothes, anything. I’m truly grateful,” Shi’Ann posted on Facebook. “My babies were discharged from the hospital yesterday & their dad was also discharged. We are now at a hotel & we’re all just working on recovering.”

She also mentioned that they still have not found a home and would appreciate any leads.

A GoFundMe was put up by a woman named Gwendolyn Powell-Dixon to help the family recover from the tragic event. Today, through the help of kind people, they have already raised $490,865.

We hope nothing but healing and light for Ray’s family.
