They say that you’re never too old to learn something new. Well, this video shows that you’re never too young, either.

Do you ever wonder how much babies can actually understand?

Sure, they may not be able to understand words, but can they instinctively understand the meaning of certain things based on the way you say them?

If this father-daughter conversation is anything to go by, then the answer is yes.

The dad announced to his daughter that he needed to have a conversation with her. The baby stared into her father’s eyes as he said this.

Then he recounted what had happened just a little while ago. “You were sitting very quietly, and all of a sudden, you started crying. I need to know why”

The baby smiled at this. It was as if she just suddenly became aware that her father’s seriousness was actually a joke.

After a few more moments of silence, with only smiles for an answer, the father started questioning again. “I’m curious, can you go ahead and tell me why you were crying?”

Once more, the baby smiled lovingly up at her father. The humor in his words was clearly not lost on her, despite the fact that she’d only been in the world for less than a month. In fact, this time she even let out a little laugh.

The dad asked the girl a few more times. Eventually, he tried to explain to her that as she was almost four weeks old, she was an adult now.

Finally, the dad told the girl that from now on there could only be smiling and no crying. So the baby’s smile grew even wider. Then the dad kissed the baby.

Luckily, the mom was filming this heartwarming moment, and she uploaded it to YouTube.

She was shocked when it gained many, many views. To date, the video has received over 700,000 views. It also has more than 14,000 likes and 1,100 comments. People have been saying things like this:

The mom kept on updating the world with her daughter’s life and developments. It’s clear that the parents are constantly saying affirming things to her:

And before the girl was three months old the parents had even taught her to blow a kiss. Luckily, this moment was also caught on camera:

But when do babies really first understand tone of voice? The baby in these videos seemed to have a pretty strong knowledge of her father’s humor at one-month of age. Is that really possible?

University of Pennsylvania says that babies can already understand the meaning behind many spoken words by the age of six months. On top of this, Psychology Today states that “All babies have a universal, inherited, built-in signaling system with which they both send and receive signals.”

So the baby in the video clearly isn’t old enough to understand the meaning behind any of the words that the dad was saying. But she was able to interpret the signals that the father was sending her, such as tone of voice, inflections and facial expressions.”

The message is clear: Talk to your babies with love and talk to them often, because they understand a lot!
