Dad plays “boogie woogie” on piano until daughter’s drum solo steals the show
If you’re a person who loves music, then it’s likely it touches you in a very profound way. There is a captivating energy with music that can only be experienced and not explained. You get it, or you don’t.
If you’re a musician, you feel all of the above, even harder. You can express yourself and talk to other musicians with your instrument. The conversations are beautiful and fulfilling.
But, could you imagine doing that with a family member? It has to be deeply satisfying.
For Austrian father-daughter duo, Martin and Sabine Pyrker, you can see the energy when they play together.
Martin Pyrker began his musical endeavors playing the drums. A great instrument to learn rhythm, feel, and song structure. But only a few years into the drums, he discovered his passion for the piano and began the journey playing along with the blues.
He would become a renowned piano player and joined many other famous pianists for concerts and inspiration. Those other pianists turned him onto boogie-woogie style piano playing, and together in the 1970s, they would release Austria’s first boogie-woogie album.
It was called the “Boogie-Woogie Session ’76”- and it ignited the growth of the genre in both Austria and Germany.
Since then, Martin has played internationally and at home for crowds, performing solo and also with many other acclaimed musicians.
Even more recently, in 1999, he decided to begin playing with another person- his daughter Sabine.
Growing up with Martin and all the music that surrounds him, Sabine grew up being exposed to the life of music. So, like her father, she began learning the piano when she was seven years old. But also like her father, she discovered shortly after the instrument that meant the most to her; the drums.
When Sabine was 13 years old, she took to the stage for the very first time with her father, playing some additional percussion.
Over time she has developed her own musical career.
The video brings us back to 2009 when the two were both well-seasoned musicians and came to the stage to share their talents with us.
The video begins with Martin starting the boogie-woogie rhythm on the bass keys of his piano.
Within just a few seconds, you can feel the groove- and so does Sabine as she jumps right in.
Sabine starts lightly playing the drums, but her ability to keep time with the beat is dead-on. She plays with a traditional grip.
Notice each hand holds the stick differently; one overhand and one underhand. Keep note of this as we go.
Martin continues to progress the song taking less focus on the heavy rhythm and moves to the lead. He shows off his skills at this point.
His right hand is entertaining on its own, generating various melodies and patterns.
Don’t forget about his left hand holding down the rhythm, all while doing this.
Martin is very impressive.
Martin lets off the gas and brings his playing to an end. Sabine has her moment to shine now, and she doesn’t disappoint.
It’s tough to describe her drum solo; you simply have to watch it to appreciate it.
But notice, about halfway through, Sabine changes her grip to both overhand, adding in an excellent section of rim shots on the snare drum before taking back the traditional grip. Very cool stuff.
Sabine and Martin put on a dazzling display of talent in the video. It’s wonderfully untarnished by any other musicians as it’s simply a musical father-daughter dance.
