Kids keep texting at dinner table, dad responds and hilariously solves the problem

There is nothing more classic than the daily family dinner. Whether you are a kid growing up or a parent to said kid, there’s a good chance that at the end of each day, your family comes together to gather around a meal. It’s a wonderful opportunity to simultaneously eat your greens and vent about your day at work or school and it is a tradition that has taken place for many, many years.
That is why it is frustrating when the kids at the table are rude and spend all of their time on their phones (assuming the family doesn’t have a strict “no phones at the table” rule).
A hilarious short video called “Pass The Salt” follows the story of a father who gets annoyed at his sons for ignoring him at the dinner table. The video, created by Matthew Abeler, was uploaded a few years ago and has gone viral since then, garnering more than 18.6 million views to this day.

The video begins with a family gathered around the table as they eat dinner. Soon the two sons’ phones ring and they pick up, continuing to text throughout their meal. They are completely oblivious to their mom and dad who are silently talking to each other and expressing their frustration.
The dad asks his son to pass the salt and he does but fails to even look at him while he does it. It is complete ignorance, which clearly sets their father off!
As the boys continue to text, the father whips a big, old fashioned typewriter out of nowhere and begins to obnoxiously type on it. It’s loud, and the boys clearly notice as they turn their heads and give their dad a funny look.

Finally, after exchanging several looks, one son speaks up. “Dad, what are you doing?” he asks with some serious confusion.
“Sorry, I must’ve been a little… Distracted,” the dad responds with a dramatic pause. The mother sits to the side and simply observes all of the insane behavior and laughs to herself.

A moment goes by and then the children decide to obey and put their phones away. They clearly understood the message, but just to make sure, their father asked them to pass the salt one more time.
This time, he actually got his salt. Happy ending for everyone!

The clip is so short — clocking in at a minute and 41 seconds — yet so powerful. There is not even a whole lot of dialogue going on, as it is mostly silence and animated facial expressions. Yet, the message is giving is so powerful. If you are not paying attention, you are hurting the people around you. Despite the ever-evolving technology today, it is so important to know when to put your phone down (family dinner being a good start) and be present with the people you truly love.

Some viewers found the video powerful while others found it funny. “I would’ve texted them to pass the salt,” one person joked in the comment section.
