Young girls claim 1st place with fiery dance routine to 'Bohemian Rhapsody;

With Freddie Mercury’s heavenly vocals, out-of-the-box lyrics, and genre-hopping composition, it’s hard to deny the sheer cultural impact of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”. It easily gets any person within ear-shot to headbang or sing along.

There is hardly any doubt that Bohemian Rhapsody is a legendary song. It’s been covered countless times by all kinds of artists, including (but not limited to) Panic! At the Disco, Pentatonix and “Weird Al” Yankovic.

Most covers of the song though, happen to be vocal or instrumental covers. Compared to vocal covers, dance covers are few and far in-between. This fact is hardly surprising since it’s difficult to resist singing along to the infectious melody of Queen’s hit song.

But don’t be fooled. While dance covers of the song are far outnumbered by singing covers, that doesn’t mean they can’t impress just as much. This brings us to the showstopping dance routine performed by an all-girl dance group for the Radix dance competition that took place in Anaheim, California.

Clad in black leotards, the group of 7 girls approached the stage with confidence and didn’t hold back once the music started. Their choreography, carefully rehearsed, began with gracefully synced movements to the iconic opening lyrics of the song.

And if that doesn’t sound impressive enough, the girls weren’t a year older than 12. The youngest members of the group were even as young as 10.

From there, they quickly cranked up the energy during the operatic portion of the song, much to the crowd’s approval. The song had to be trimmed down to fit the time frame allotted for their performance, and as a result, the performance is all the more dynamic.

The choreography is the work of Molly Long, an accomplished dancer whose YouTube channel now sits at around 24,000 subscribers featuring other dance routines she’s choreographed.

The girls made heavy use of their impressive flexibility during their dance, something that probably takes hours of practice and stretching. Their incredible tumbles and flamboyant movements would definitely be uncomfortable for an untrained person All those hours seem to have paid off, it seems.

The judges were every bit as impressed as the audience, and the girls easily walked away with the title of First place in the “Junior Jazz Group” category. Much deserved if you ask us!

These were the words Freddie Mercury used to describe their music, and the band’s legacy more than lives up to it. It’s difficult to find anyone who hasn’t heard the song or at least knows its ever iconic lyrics.

Perhaps one of the most memorable uses of Bohemian Rhapsody is the iconic head-banging-in-the-car scene from the film Wayne’s World, which was even sneakily referenced in the Queen Biopic titled after the song.

One can’t help but imagine what Freddie Mercury would think if he got to see his current legacy. Safe to say, he’d be very proud. The biopic is largely responsible for reintroducing Queen to a younger generation.

After the film’s release, the song broke the record for the most streamed song of the 21st century. Shortly after, it also became the first music video from before the 21st century to hit 1 billion views on YouTube, assuring us that Queen’s cultural impact is far from over.
