Urban dance masters astound viewers with unexpected moves to Ed Sheeran’s mellow “I See Fire”

Ed Sheeran isn’t typically the first musician who comes to mind when you think about backing up some hip hop dance grooves.

Nevertheless, his song “I See Fire,” from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug soundtrack was the backdrop for a jaw-dropping dance display from Anthony Lee and Vinh Nguyen of The Kinjaz Crew.

The performance was filmed in 2015 as part of the Urban Dance Camp initiative at a studio in Germany. Over the last 15 years, Urban Dance Camp has become one of the most high-profile dance education camps in the world. It’s where everyone from studio teachers to YouTube dance stars with massive followings to internationally-renowned choreographers gathers once a year for performances, tutorials, inspiration, and networking.

According to their website:

“Dancers, teachers, and choreographers from more than 40 countries participate each year. The UDC is the perfect event to present your dance skills to a worldwide choreography-oriented audience, to get new inspirations for your own choreographies and opportunities to meet new international partners.”

In this performance, just two members of The Kinjaz Crew perform for students. You may recognize the name of the group because they were the runners-up on the 8th season of America’s Best Dance Crew. And while they have their own studio space – called The Dojo, in Monterey Park, California – members (or “KINstructors”) frequently travel to events like this (expanding The Kinjaz Crews’ “kommunity”).

Now, we have to admit that when we saw two dancers with their heads bowed about to dance to an Ed Sheeran ballad from a Lord of the Rings soundtrack, we didn’t have high hopes. But this performance is absolutely incredible. The body control, synchronicity, and choreography all make it a must-watch.

Just like in The Wizard of Oz, when everything brightens into technicolor the real fun begins.

And while this is going to be a slow groove, it’s all about beautiful, flowing movement.

It’s like watching tai chi but with some serious flair!

Be sure to watch the little micro-movements as well when you enjoy this dance. It’s choreographed down to the millimeter and even the tiniest foot movement (such as laying down a foot, slowly, from heel to toe) is matched up perfectly between the dancers.

Slow and steady is the way these dancers move. But despite the lack of gymnastics or fast foot movements, this is just as difficult as any other style of dance. You might even call some of the movements Michael Jackson-esque (and no matter what you think of the King of Pop, there’s no denying he was an amazing dancer).

Commenters also appreciated the technical skill that went into the performance.

“Dance isn’t always flashy and filled with tricks. Sometimes it’s simple and leaves you speechless in mind but full in heart. I don’t think I took a single breath throughout the entire duration of this video. Fantastic job. You can just feel the emotion in this piece,” said one.

It’s pretty clear that these two have a lot to teach and undoubtedly inspired the students watching in the studio as well as many of the millions who have watched it online over the last few years.

As their performance ends, the appreciative audience tosses shoes and hats towards the dancers as if they were flowers on the stage after a ballet.
