Dancers are challenged to swing dance the 'Macarena' – bring down the house with their moves
Can you name every dance craze from the past decade? From 2012 to 2015 we had Gangnam Style, Uptown Funk, Hotline Bling, Nae Nae and Juju on That Beat.
It’s hard to remember a time when at least one of these songs wasn’t constantly playing on the radio or in public
The emergence of Gen Z internet culture also helped popularize several dance crazes in the latter 2010s. The most notable examples are definitely Fortnite and TikTok. Even though they were played for laughs and memes, they were still dance crazes no less.
You may know at least one person who’s attempted to learn the popular Fornite default dance (which was actually taken from the Amercian TV series Scrubs), the floss, or the shoot dance.
Then 2018 gave us the Kiki challenge, an admittedly dangerous one that used Drake’s In My Feelings as the song. Many of us found them quite annoying, but it’s hard to deny that they feel rather nostalgic now
Some of the most recent dances that have climbed up the pop culture ladder are the Say So challenge courtesy of TikTok, and the “Torture Dance” thanks to the recent anime adaptation of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure : Golden Wind.
But let’s not forget our roots! Dance crazes have been around way before we had YouTube, Vine or TikTok. Some of you pop culture veterans and 90s kids definitely remember the all too famous (or infamous?) Macarena.
As a matter of fact, you probably still know most of the dance steps. The 1995 song by Los Del Rio is part of the original, classic lineup of pop songs with iconic dance steps. Right up there with MC Hammer’s Can’t Touch This and MJ’s Thriller.
Everyone knows the dance steps to the Macarena. They are very simple, after all. Maybe even too simple for some dancers. That’s why these two, Jordan Frisbee and Emeline Rochefuille, wanted to mix things up a bit.
At the Budafest, the dance contest follows a quirky rule. Two dancers are chosen to do an impromptu performance to one of three songs. They have to choose one of the 3 that are played. They’re free to pick any, but if they refuse the first 2, then they have to go with the third one as per the rules of the game.
The contestants are all professional dancers who participate to showcase their skills and just have fun. At this 2020 event, dancer Emeline Rochefuille was selected to be Jordan Frisbee’s partner.
This is what makes it challenging, since you’re being randomly paired together with someone you may have never even met before
As they greet each other in front of crowd, the selection of songs they have to choose from are played. They turn down the first one, right before Macarena is played. It looks like this song wasn’t their first choice, but the overwhelming encouragement from the crowd convinced them to go with it.
This is an unusual song choice with a dance partner they’ve ever met before! Can they do it?
The song plays, and they go slowly first to see how well they can improvise. Once they’re comfortable, they kick things up to speed and let loose. Now we get to see their skills shine.
And boy do they know what they’re doing! It doesn’t take long before they quickly adapt their routine to fit the song. They incorporate the iconic dance steps of the Macarena, but they blend it with their shining skills at swing dancing. You may notice throughout the video that Emiline looks almost like she’s floating across the floor.
In fact, she seems to be the one carrying the routine with Jordan following her lead
She lets him spin her around while she glides around her partner. There seems to be no friction between her shoes and the floor. She begins incorporating the iconic Macarena steps while she and Jordan side-step across the dance floor.
Not looking to be outdone, Jordan is just as quick on his feet too
His synchronization, holding Emiline while doing his own footwork to match hers, is nothing short of impressive.
In partner-dancing, the guys usually do little more than hold onto the girl’s arms while she does most of the work. Jordan immediately proves that he can do way more than that. He glides along just as much as Emeline, and can instantly match her routine when she gives the signal.
Once he sees what idea Emeline has, he gives it a try himself and shows off his skills at both dancing and improvising. After spending the first half of the routine following her lead, it’s his turn. First he does a forward-shuffle while doing the Macarena, with Emeline behind him.
She mirrors his dance steps and then gives the signal (read : an air kick) for him to to match her again. Then he takes her hand and side-steps backwards from her, pretending to pull her along. Then they return to the old-fashioned tossing and swinging (that this style of dance is named for) to the best of their skill.
The audience cheers, in sheer awe of how well Emeline and Jordan adapted to an impromptu couple dance
The synchronization, gracefulness of their movements, and being able to seemingly float across the dance floor without missing a step is nothing short of remarkable.
Among all the performances from the 2020 Budafest dance competition, this one seems to have the most views on YouTube. It doesn’t take long to see why. We’re sure they miss dancing now that we’re all in quarantine.
But at least we all get to enjoy their performance by watching from our homes. Let’s hope they’re finding time to practice indoors so they don’t get rusty when quarantine is over! In the meantime, you can enjoy their performance by watching the video down below. You really need to see this one for yourself!
