Deaf and blind dog comforts every foster animal that his family brings home

Some dogs seem to never give up. Take Sherio for instance. He is a deaf and partially blind pup who spent time in two animal shelters. His long journey to his forever home took him through 12 foster homes and four adoptive homes that ended up not being quite the right fit.

Finally, after two years, Sherio was able to find his forever home. Best of all, the lovable dog has been paying it forward by comforting foster animals that come through his home.

Sherio endeared himself to Sheryl Smith right away

Sheryl Smith has been rescuing abandoned and mistreated animals for years, so when she saw Sherio, she knew she had to give him a home.

“He was a handful, but everyone else had given up on him and we weren’t prepared to do that too,” Smith told The Dodo. “He still to this day cries in the car because he thinks he’s being dropped off somewhere else.”

She was surprised to find that Sherio took joy in comforting the other animals, especially the cats, that she brought into her home. He is especially fond of kittens, who he likes to give a good licking to let them know that they are loved.

Smith, who is a full-time foster mom, posts about Sherio’s journey on his very own Facebook page and talks there about how hard it has been for him to adjust to the presence of other dogs, especially larger ones. Since adopting Sherio, he has proven just how much he loves other animals.

“Just after his rescue, I rescued a pregnant dog who was too sick to care for her pups, so Sherio climbed in with them and started cleaning them. He’s done that with every rescue I take in. He will just sit patiently with the feral cats/kittens and bonds so strongly with them; they trust him before they trust me,” Smith said.

A case in point is a kitten that Smith took in. Named Tiny Tolley, the feral cat had come into her home skin and bones. As Smith nursed the kitten back to health, Sherio seemed to sense that she needed help.

“Shiro never left her crate for a second,” Smith said. “He knew she was so sick and so scared and that she needed to be comforted.”

Even after Tiny Tolley had regained much of her strength, Sherio was there by her side. He would even give her big puppy kisses with his tongue, which seemed to catch the young cat by surprise.

Sherio is a friend to all of the animals that come to his home

Smith took comfort in the fact that as Tiny Tolley got stronger, Sherio was there by her side every step of the way as her best friend. Sherio seems to have that knack and loves to be a best friend for all of the animals that come through his home. Maybe it is because he understands what it is like to be unwanted.

“His love and compassion for the other rescues is nothing short of amazing,” Smith said.
