Deaf dog gets adopted by a deaf man and teaches him sign language
The beginning doesn’t define the ending.
The most beautiful stories out there don’t usually start well, oftentimes, they begin with a rough start just like the dog in this story.
At just 6 weeks old, a pup named Emerson was rescued from a shelter in Florida and soon after, was transferred to NFR Maine, a non-profit foster-based dog rescue.
Unfortunately, they found out that the poor pooch caught an infection called canine parvovirus. The virus was known to be life-threatening if not immediately treated, thankfully, Emerson managed to survive and continue his life.
However, when Emerson finally recovered, his carers noticed something pretty odd about him.
On a Facebook post by NFR Maine, they wrote, “We aren’t sure if Emerson was born deaf and visually impaired or if it was a result of the seizures but what we DO know is that neither one of those bother him one bit.”
They also mentioned that Emerson was expected to be the “Most Likely to Succeed” among other dogs. Sadly, it wasn’t how things turned out because all of his other dog siblings were immediately adopted, except him.
But that didn’t stop the rescuers from giving him his forever home and family.
Soon, they decided to hasten up their search by writing adoption advertisements for Emerson. They urged people to adopt him because he’s a special pup and that his difference from other dogs doesn’t make him unlikeable.
He’s still a loyal pup and just like other dogs, Emerson also deserves a happy life.
On another Facebook post they wrote, “He wants everyone to know that even though he may be deaf, he is still an AMAZING little pup with SOO much love to give! All he wants in the whole wide world is to be someone’s companion! He is not an overly needy pup, he is content snuggling on the couch with you, or finding the perfect sunny spot on the floor to relax in.”
The search was over when someone stepped in to adopt little Emerson.
Weeks after their search, the shelter received an adoption application from Nick Abbott. Knowing Emerson’s challenges, Nick couldn’t help but relate to the dog because he’s also deaf.
“I said- Oh, he’s deaf too,” Nick told WABI5. “Maybe I can go check him out to see what he’s all about.”
It’s a perfect match! Emerson’s potential owner wasted no time and dropped by to finally meet his future dog.
“He came straight to me at the door and sat right away at my feet and stayed there,” he said while recalling his first meeting with Emerson. “So you can tell he kind of picked me. And I knew right then and there that we would get along and understand each other pretty good.”
They may not hear each other but the beats of their hearts were in sync, they fell for each other right there and then. Soon, Nick taught his new dog commands through hand gestures.
The “s” sign for “sit” and sweeping the hand across a straight line for “lie down”.
These are just among the many visual commands that he taught his dog. What everybody else thought was going to be Nick and Emerson’s challenge surprisingly became the key to their beautiful relationship.
Many people might find their inability to hear an inconvenience, but to them, it’s their way of communicating and understanding each other on a much deeper level. Nick and Emerson don’t need their ears to hear each other’s hearts.
“The bond that we have is awesome,” Nick said. “We understand each other very well. I’d like to think it was meant to be. He’s special.”
