ASL performer wows Super Bowl crowd with his heartfelt translation of the national anthem
In the recently held Super Bowl LV, a list of world-class musical artists gathered and performed in front of a huge crowd. From the singing of the national anthem to the halftime show, everything was incredibly fantastic. Each performance was nothing short of what everyone has expected from the annual big event.
However, with all the amazing performers on board, one particularly unique musical artist stood out. It’s not simply because he’s great, but because he’s the voice of those who can’t hear – just like him.
He is none other than Warren Snipe.

He is professionally known as “Wawa” and he is a deaf writer, rapper, and performer. He was featured in the R&B artist Maxwell’s “Fingers Crossed” lyric video and completed an album called “Deaf: So What.ā He was also a founding member of the Wild Zappers, it’s an all-male dance group that consists of all deaf members. The group combines American Sign Language, music, and dance to promote the education of sign language within the Deaf and hearing communities.
Super Bowl LV.
The recently held Super Bowl featured the battle between the National Football Conference (NFC) champion, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the American Football Conference (AFC) champion Kansas City Chiefs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated Kansas City Chiefs on a score of 31ā9, making them the champion of the National Football League (NFL) for the 2020 NFL season.
Aside from the intense game, the Super Bowl LV was also filled with stunning performances from various musical artists like Jazmine Sullivan, Eric Church, H.E.R., and The Weekend.
This video features Warren Snipe’s spine-chilling ASL (American Sign Language) performance to the national anthem.
A powerful performance!
If you haven’t seen an ASL performance ever, then this one is the best way to start it. The video starts as Snipe stands on the football field, getting ready for his much-awaited part on the event. When Eric Church goes singing the first few lines of the national anthem, “Wawa” immediately begins with his ASL translation of the song. Snipe is all-smiles while putting up an impeccable performance on the side.
When Jazmine Sullivan’s lines come in, Warren continues to flaunt his heartfelt body language. He serves as the voice of those who can’t hear. It’s very hard to bring emotions to a song without speaking a word, it is a tough job, but Snipe delivers!
He is the best man for the job.
The best person to produce such emotion without even talking should be a person who can actually relate, and that’s none other than Snipe himself because he is deaf. A lot of people are gifted with a beautiful voice but only a few can pour heartfelt emotions into a performance.
His beautiful performance will definitely take your heart away in an instant.
In an interview, the 50-year-old musical artist said:
āI was very honored and humbled to be selected to perform these songs at the Super Bowl. It was always my dream to perform at the Super Bowl, and I would love to be able to perform the halftime show in ASL too!ā
The video was also uploaded on the Facebook page of the National Association of the Deaf – NAD. In fact, as of this writing, 72,000 people have already reacted to the video, with 6,500 comments from the online community.
Even those who are not deaf were amazed by Snipe’s ASL rendition of the national anthem. One Facebook user wrote:
“I loved his performance! He did an awesome job! Iām not deaf but I felt like I could hear him through his expressions ā¤ļø”
While this one wrote nothing but words of praises:
“Now that was absolutely the most powerful and beautiful ASL performance I have ever had the privilege to watch!!! You sir did an amazing presentation with so much power and grace in your performance, thank you for giving us the privilege of watching you perform. That was awesome.ššššš”
Warren “Wawa” Snipe reminds us all that being deaf is not always a disability, it’s also a gift. In his case, his amazing ASL rendition of America’s national anthem dives deep within the innermost of our emotions and brings so much pride to the American people and their heritage.
