Elderly couple moved to tears when they see that son converted his basement into new home for them
You are all familiar with the classic bachelor pad — a man cave dedicated to a life of no commitment — but have you heard of the granny pad?
Yeah, neither did we, until this amazing son came along.
Part of being a good child is making sure your parents are taken care of once they get older. It’s not always easy, but it’s an important gesture to make. After all, they did their fair share of taking care of you! It’s really important to reciprocate that unconditional love.
Schon Miller is a perfect example of a dream child. He knew he had to take care of his 87-year-old parents, Bonnie and George, when they were starting to struggle.
A change needed to be made, but Schon’s parents couldn’t do it on their own.
It got to the point where they needed to consider senior living options. The problem was that, honestly, the options weren’t so great. Whenever they’d consider a place, they just couldn’t stand the thought (they are not particularly known to be the best of places).
So that’s when Schon decided to take matters into his own hands and create their own space.
And so they began searching for a new home. One with an attached in-law suite. But there was a problem… They just couldn’t find anything that was suitable on the market.
It was time to turn to plan B: Refurbish their basement rec room.
When the sweet couple finally got to see their brand-new room on March 13, 2019, they were overfilled with joy. And luckily, the whole moment was captured on camera and later shared via Caters Clips, where it garnered half a million views.
The video was filmed by their daughter-in-law, Jeannie, who also helped Schon transform the basement.
“We had been talking about it with mum for a while because we knew they were leaning on each other with one good body and one good mind,” Schon said.
Now that George and Bonnie had their own space to live in the basement, Schon and Jeannie could help them with the everyday tasks that would be presented to them. Bonnie needed to use a wheelchair and George wasn’t as mentally sharp as he once was (a result of older age). They weren’t able to do them alone and senior homes seemed bleak, so this was the perfect option.
Everyone felt great about it and was very excited. Even George and Bonnie shed a few tears as they took a tour of their future home. It is ideal for their children to be nearby, just to be safe.
Schon and Jeannie worked tirelessly on the new granny pad, but it was finally complete. Everyone was blown away.
“It is so pretty. Look at everything!” Bonnie says in the adorable clip.
The new granny pad came with a newly-installed kitchen with all of the appliances and a customized bathroom.
The entire space was very handicap friendly, as Schon and Jeannie put in so much love and attention to every detail.
It warms are hearts to see such dedication.
