Hawk swoops down to snatch bunny from field but deer comes to the rescue

Animals usually help others that belong to their species. It goes without saying that older animals will protect babies, especially when they notice predators around them.

But, sometimes, animals belonging to different species will go the extra mile to help each other.

“Cross-species symbiosis is also frequently observed. It may not seem advantageous for two different species to help each other, but a partnership can be beneficial,” experts explain.

In this story, it is a deer that helps a rabbit escape a swooping hawk that would have otherwise killed it.

You see, hawks are natural predators and they live on small animals, like snakes, fish, mice, squirrels, and rabbits.

So, when the bird of prey noticed there was potential food on the ground, it didn’t waste time. It swooped down on it.

The small rabbit started making sounds that revealed it was in distress, possibly calling for help.

Although other rabbits could not help it, because they would risk being killed and devoured by the big bird themselves, another animal was around, and it was ready to act.

A deer happened to be around, and it is possible that it mistook the rabbit’s screams for a fawn’s distress call.

Whatever the case, the rabbit rushed to fight off the hawk, giving the little lagomorph time to escape.

The rabbit couldn’t have run faster when it got the chance.

The deer fought with the bird and it obviously won. Although deer are herbivores, it did bite on the hawk and it went on for several minutes until it made sure the predator was dead.

Later on, Kris Miller, a 29-year-old operations manager, noticed a red-tailed hawk lying dead nearby while trimming trees around Nordic Mountain country park, Wisconsin.

He found it weird because, as he pointed out, hawks don’t just fall from the sky and die. So, he was curious about what had happened there earlier.

Miller knew that there was one of the security cameras looking towards the “crime scene”, and he played the footage on his phone, trying to find out when the incident happened.

Indeed, he soon found the video of the hawk swooping down on the rabbit before being killed by a deer.

“I played back the footage on my phone and what I found was astonishing,” he shared. “I showed it to my co-worker and he didn’t know what to say.”

Of course, he didn’t! This is one of those stories that nobody believes unless you have proof. And, luckily, Miller does have proof.

The video of the rabbit’s rescue has gone viral with more than 2 million views.

People are astonished by the deer’s fierceness.

“I’m 73 years old and I’ve seen a lot of things but I’ve never seen something like this. I want to thank you for sharing,” a YouTube user commented.
