Swing dance flash mob takes over international airport and brings smiles to weary travelers

It’s pretty rare to have any fun at the airport. But if you passed through the Denver International Airport’s Jeppesen Terminal on November 22, 2011, you no doubt traveled with a smile.

At first, everyone looks suitably miserable as they go about their business of getting from point A to point B for the Thanksgiving holiday (also known as the busiest time of year to fly!).

But then we get a shot of the beautiful, bright atrium as travelers mill about and suddenly hear Glenn Miller’s ultra-recognizable hit “In the Mood.”

It’s not entirely out of the ordinary to hear music in the airport, so no one pays much attention at first, even after a handful of women pop out of nowhere and begin to clap their hands over the heads and line up in the middle of the space.

But it doesn’t take them too long to draw the attention of travelers – after all, we’re told to always be on the lookout for anything out of the ordinary at the airport!

Suddenly, some gentlemen join in and the real swing dancing begins.

The partners join hands and execute some twists and twirls that certainly made travelers realize that they were in for a good show (as long as they didn’t have to rush off to catch a plane).

But what began as three pairs of dancers quickly doubles – and more and more people are compelled to look on.

After some dramatic dips, lifts, and other high-flying moves the music changes and the group of 6 pairs gets some company.

Suddenly there are around 3 dozen people on the floor, surrounded by an ever-growing crowd.

And we’d be hard-pressed not to join in if we saw a big group of people doing the Charleston!

As the sound of (fake) jets overhead fills the atrium, the dancers duck in faux fear. But that’s simply a distraction to increase their numbers yet again.

And yet another Glen Miller song comes on – this time “Sing, Sing, Sing” fills the airport.

Now it’s a party as dozens MORE dancers pop out to help put on the ultimate show.

It’s no surprise that the video has been viewed nearly 3 million times on YouTube alone since it was posted.

Overall, around 100 dancers from Denver’s Community-Minded Dance (CM Dance) joined in the flash mob at Denver Airport’s Great Hall (which is outside security at the airport, so the dancers didn’t need tickets to get in!), according to HuffPost.

As you might imagine, there was more than one viewer who grabbed some footage on their phone as they watched the surprise performance. And who can blame them? It’s not every day you see a few dozen swing dance at the airport – and do it with such style!

From all-black ensembles to puffer coats and jeans, the dancers didn’t need any sort of costume to make their performance special. And that’s the great thing about swing dance – it allows anyone to participate and come as they are.

We have no doubt that more than a few onlookers considered a dance lesson or two after seeing this fun-loving performance.

CM Dance was started in 1999 to bring dance to children and other community members who might not normally get a chance to experience the art form. And it’s clear that that’s precisely what they did on that day in Denver!
