Cop saves baby who stopped breathing at mall

Police officers in Oregon are being hailed heroes after rushing to give a baby life-saving CPR after they stopped breathing at a Clackamas mall.

Kaylob Harmon and Jessie Siefer were taking their week-old daughter to J.C. Penney for her very first photo shoot when the happy occasion suddenly turned chaotic and nearly tragic.

All of a sudden, Audrey Harmon stopped breathing. In a panic, her parents rushed around the mall, looking to get help for their newborn baby. Surveillance footage, seen below, shows Audrey’s dad trying to administer CPR to his little girl, while bystanders rush to help.

Jessie, Audrey’s mom, calls 911 on her cell phone and was instructed by the dispatched on how to do mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Just moments later, deputies arrived and began to take over the rescue efforts. Chest compressions were performed as other officers checked to make sure the little baby’s airways weren’t blocked.

“Deputy Zacharkiw turned Audrey over on her stomach and performed a burping chest pat to remove fluid from the baby’s airway,” a statement said. “After he flipped Audrey back over, Deputy Russell used a Bulbous nose sucker to extract fluid from the infant’s nose.”

“Honestly, I thought the baby had passed away already,” Deputy Jonathan Zacharkiw, who performed the chest compressions, told Inside Edition. “It was the most upsetting thing I had ever seen in this job.”

Fifteen minutes after Audrey stopped breathing, the fire department arrived on the scene, continuing CPR – that’s when the infant began to breathe again.

Audrey was immediately rushed to the hospital where she stayed in intensive care. A week later, the deputies were invited to come and visit the little girl who was still recovering but would have likely died if it wasn’t for their quick action.

“It was unbelievably heartwarming to be invited back, and amazing to see how far she has progressed since last Sunday,” said Deputy Jonathan Zacharkiw, according to a statement from the Clackamas County, Oregon sheriff’s office.

Deputies Zacharkiw, Dan Olson and Jonah Russell were beyond ecstatic to see Audrey with life in her cheeks. When they first saw her – she was pale and unresponsive. The doctors believe she had choked on fluids in her airway.

The family has set up a GoFundMe to help pay for the baby’s medical bills. It will be a long road to recovery for the little girl.

Audrey’s dad, Kaylob, gave this latest update on the page:

“Audrey is headed home. The next 4-6 weeks (at least ) she will be on a feeding tube. Oxygen and a monitor. It is going to be a huge relief to be home but it is going to be a completely new experience being home. With all the equipment it is likely one of us will always have to be home. Audrey Elizabeth is a fighter if i have ever seen one. Since Jessie got pregnant i have always called her my savage. She is proving me right. We are hoping after a few tests and doctors visits she will come off of everything. Only the future can tell. We cant say it enough. Thank you so very much to anyone who has shown support!”
