When owner is in trouble, disabled dog jumps a fence to save his life

Hip dysplasia is a debilitating condition that affects both humans and animals. It is most common in larger dogs and causes degeneration in the joints. This can leave your pet lame and unable to walk properly.

One dog did not let his hip dysplasia stop him when his owner was in serious trouble.

Boxer-pit bull mix Chance suffers from hip dysplasia. At 10 years old, Chance has been with his owner, Billy Collins, since he was just a puppy.

“He’s my buddy. We get along. He follows me through the house,” the Vietnam vet explained to WATE 6 News. “When we go outside, he has to be by me.”

One day as Collins went about his day, he slipped and fell in his home. As he fell, he sliced his head open. At this point, Collins fell unconscious.

That was when Chance sprung into action. First, he tried to wake his owner up, but Collins was out cold.

When he was unable to wake Collins up, Chance came up with another plan. Opening the screen door, a skill that Collins taught him, he went to find help outside. If only he could get to the neighbors next door.

Unfortunately, there was a large fence between him and his goal.

Unbelievably, Chance was able to jump the fence despite his disability. As he approached the front door of his neighbor’s home, the neighbor came outside. There he found Chance covered in blood. The neighbors immediately knew something was wrong and rushed to Collins’ aid.

Thanks to Chance, the neighbor was able to get Collins the help he needed. Collins was able to make a full recovery, all thanks to his faithful and determined dog.

“I don’t know how long I would have laid there,” Collins said. “I could have laid there and bled out.”

While any dog can suffer from hip dysplasia, the condition is especially prevalent in larger dogs. While the condition can drastically reduce a dog’s quality of life, dog owners can take steps to keep them comfortable, despite the pain they might be suffering.

Dog foods containing joint supplements, such as glucosamine, helps to alleviate the pain, as well as the joint wear that results from hip dysplasia. Other steps that owners of dogs with hip dysplasia can take include putting their dog on a diet to help reduce their weight, taking them for physical therapy, and giving them medication, such as an anti-inflammatory.
