Woman becomes disabled – then 60 neighbors sign up to help with nightly routine

Kathy Felt’s entire life changed when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) ten years ago.

The woman, who lived in Sandy, Utah, saw her health slowly deteriorate after the diagnose. She was unable to walk, move, or even get herself into her own bed. At that point, it was clear that she needed help and could no longer live on her own.

So she thought her best option was a nursing home… Only until her incredible neighbors came in and turned her entire life around out of the kindness of their own hearts.

Before Felt even got the chance to move into a nursing home, her neighbors appeared with a list of names.

How is a list of names going to help Ms. Felt, you ask? Well, turns out it had a major significance. These were names of neighbors who were more than willing to help the woman around whenever she needed.

Even when this Felt was ready to give up and get help from strangers, her neighbors had much better plans in mind for her.

The list consisted of 60 names of different men who, in pairs, would show up and ring her bell to help her get into bed. It was completely voluntary — they simply wanted to help and show their neighbor the kindness she needed.

“I cried, just like now,” Felt told CBS Sunday Morning. “I was so moved. This is my miracle.”

Felt’s aides also explained exactly how it works when the men help her. They take off her slippers and socks and then one man gets on one side and the other man gets on the other side. Together, they lift her up onto the bed.

Additionally, they make sure her phone is next to her, they make sure her pillows are all set, and make sure she is all tucked in before they leave for the night. They take care of all those little details to make sure she is completely safe and comfortable the whole time.

Her neighbors have been following this nightly routine seven days a week, for 10 years.

Luckily, Felt’s sons help her get up in the morning. The neighbors come into play at night when it is time to go to sleep.

The best part is that the number of people who want to help Felt has actually been increasing. She doesn’t have to worry about running out of help any time soon. In fact, it is actually a challenge to give everyone a time to come help. Not a terrible problem to have!

One of the men, John Keller, admitted to CBS that he initially did not want to do it.

“I had always considered myself as a good person, Christian. Then I realized maybe I’m not. I just wanted to change. I wanted to be a better person,” he said.

After helping her though, he realized that it has actually has made him a better person and that the whole situation was actually a blessing in disguise. A lot of the men felt this way.

It is so amazing to see all of these neighbors come together and change each other for the best.
