When someone gets a dog, they often want them to look perfect in every way. But, not all dogs fit the bill of the perfect-looking canine, but that doesn’t make them any less deserving of love and attention. Some dogs can rise above any physical deformity they have and become a very special dog.

Take Brodie, for example, who despite his deformity, has risen to the challenge to try and make a difference in the world.

Disfigured from an early age

Attacked by his mother at the age of 13 days, Brodie, a German shepherd-border collie mix, was left with a permanently disfigured face. This has not stopped him from becoming the lovable dog that he is, but his journey to where he is now wasn’t easy.

Brodie was deemed “too hyper”

Suffering several facial and cranial injuries, Brodie was left partially blind by his ordeal. Despite this, he was adopted by a loving family. Unfortunately, this first adoption didn’t last long, as his first family soon returned him to the shelter with the complaint that he was “too hyper.”

An instant connection

It was at Old MacDonald Kennels in Alberta, Canada, that he met the family who ended up giving him his forever home. His new family cared little for the way he looked. To them, Brodie was always meant to be a part of their family.

After seeing him online, couple Amanda Richter and Brad Ames drove to the shelter the same day to adopt him and take him home with them.

“He’s definitely hyper, but he is so intelligent. His brain is perfectly fine, and he learns tricks within 10 minutes, usually, which tells me he is a smart boy,” Amanda told Metro.

Brodie is trained as a therapy dog

It is his intelligence that gave his owners the idea to train him as a therapy dog. They hope that the energetic Brodie can help others with disabilities or who might look different than others.

“He just needed patience and someone to be consistent,” Amanda said.

Brodie is as happy as can be

There is some worry that Brodie will develop more issues as he gets older. But until then he is happy to just enjoy life. According to his parents, he is as happy and healthy as ever.

“It’s actually funny because when we go to the dog park, everyone notices how he is the happiest pup there and just wants to play and run,” Amanda said.

In addition to providing therapy to those who need it, the couple hopes that Brodie’s story can inspire others to take a chance on a dog that might not look perfect.

“We also hope that we can raise awareness for other special-needs dogs and show people that just because someone or something looks different, they can be perfectly imperfect in their own unique way,” Amada said.
