Disneyland regulars have been missing their favorite dishes since this iconic theme park announced they will be closing their doors to help flatten the curve.

And, besides the rides, they have been missing something else, their iconic menu.

Lucky for us, Disneyland recently released the recipes for their iconic favorites. The recipes they released include Dole Whip, Mickey Mouse Beignets, and Woody’s Lunchbox Grilled Three-Cheese sandwich.

And now, they just released the recipe for long-time, iconic Blue Bayou Monte Cristo sandwich.

This iconic sandwich has been on the Disneyland menu since 1967, where at least 200 of the Monte Cristo sandwich is served each day. They’ve even printed a recipe card, ready to hand out to customers asking for the recipe.

It’s definitely one of the Disneyland dishes that fans miss because of the lockdown.

If you’ve never heard of the Monte Cristo, it’s a fried ham-turkey-cheese sandwich. The classic recipe calls for a cooking method similar to cooking french toast.

Well, Disneyland being Disneyland, they wanted to transform the Disneyland Monte Cristo into a sandwich people will never forget. And judging from its 50+ year history, they have definitely created an unforgettable sandwich.

Do you know what makes this sandwich different?

Yes, it’s still a ham-turkey-cheese sandwich but they use challah bread for that “fluffy texture and eggy goodness.” And, instead of dipping it in an egg-and-milk mixture, it’s dipped in an egg-and-flour mixture and then deep-fried to a golden brown.

And, of course, they added another element to have a balance of flavors and make it sweet and savory. They serve it with fresh fruit compote and sprinkled with confectioner’s sugar.

Blue Bayou Monte Cristo Sandwich

Ingredients:

  • 8 slices egg bread, sliced 1/2-inch thick
  • 1 egg
  • 1 3/4 cups and 2 tbsps water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 8 thin slices ham
  • 8 thin slices Swiss cheese
  • 3 cups canola oil
  • Confectioners sugar
  • Blackberry preserves

Instructions:

  • Whisk egg and water in a mixing bowl. Continue to whisk while you add flour, salt, and baking powder. Whisk again until the batter is smooth, about two to three minutes.
  • Slice your bread and lay them on a chopping board or plate side by side. Layer two slices of ham, turkey, and cheese on one bread slice. Cover with the other bread and slice in the middle diagonally.

  • Add oil to a frying pan. Make sure that your pan can fit the sandwich.
  • Make sure that your oil reaches a temperature between 365 degrees and 375 degrees Fahrenheit. If the oil has a higher temperature, the sandwich will not cook evenly. If it has a lower temperature, the sandwich will just soak up the oil and leave it greasy and rubbery.

  • Prepare the sandwich and batter once the oil is hot enough. Submerge the sandwich in the batter, making sure the entire sandwich is coated. Let the excess batter drip into the bowl before transferring to the pan. Do the same for the other half.

  • Cook the sandwich for three minutes on each side until it’s golden brown. Remember to be careful flipping the sandwich or the hot oil might splash on you.
  • Serve when the sandwich is warm to the touch.
  • Sprinkle confectioner’s sugar all over the sandwich and serve with blackberry preserves or your favorite fruit preserves on the side.
