Working in dog rescue must be incredibly rewarding. But equally, having to face the heartbreaking reality of dog abandonment and abuse must be difficult to say the least. Luckily, many stories about the mistreatment of dogs have happy endings.

One of these stories starts on a sunny day in Serbia. The Dog Rescue Shelter Mladenovac received a call about a dog with two puppies. The dog was curled up in a bush just off from a country road. She had snarled at someone who had tried to feed her.

She was scared and alone.

It turned out the pup had been abandoned for a couple of days by the time she was rescued. The poor thing was hiding out of fear with her babies, but she seemed to know her rescuers, giving them a tentative smile when they arrived with their camera.

It was time for the Dog Rescue Shelter Mladenovac to intervene and do what they did best: save this beautiful dog and her two pups.

Luckily, mamma dog could sense that she was in good hands, and trusted her rescuers enough to allow them to feed her. She must have been absolutely starving, and wouldn’t have had the energy to feed her pups, who were so small that they couldn’t even open their eyes.

The rescuers were able to hold the pups and give them a quick check-over when mom ate. Then it was time for the babies to feed, probably for the first time in days.

Mom was placed in a cage, while one of her rescuers gave the grass one last check-over – and discovered another tiny brown bundle in the grass! If he hadn’t have bothered to look, one of mom’s pups would have died all alone at the side of the road.

The rescuers decided to name mamma Moli, and the group headed off to the vets for precautionary treatments.Miraculously, Moli and her pups were okay. They were simply hungry and thirsty from spending so much time away from a food and water source.

If Moli had been left for just another couple of days, it could have been an entirely different story.

It’s heartbreaking to think who would abandon a dog so carelessly. Not only was Moli placed on a quiet country road, with minimal chance of rescue, she was also a new mom at the time, which meant she had her pups to think about. Her search for help would have been majorly limited by her need to stay close to her little ones.

After being given the clear by the vets, the little doggo family were placed with a loving, caring foster family. No-one can be sure what Moli went through prior to her abandonment, but what’s for sure is that she was now receiving more care than she ever had before.

It took Moli a long time to heal from the distress of being abandoned by her former family, but the beautiful dog and her pups are now happy and well.

What’s important is that Moli was saved before it was too late – and some dogs are not lucky enough to get to live out their happily ever after.
