A greenhouse is a dream for any gardener but to buy your own and install can become rather costly.

But these crafty gardeners came up with a way to build their own DIY greenhouse. All you need is about 1,500 water bottles, 4″x 4″ wooden posts, and 2″x 2″ pieces of timber. It might seem a tad intimidating but once you gather those crucial components, it’s smooth sailing.

A greenhouse is an extremely beneficial environment for plants to thrive in.

Greenhouses are actually shields for growing plants during all weather conditions. They provide shelter for plants who might not survive in extreme temperatures and also even protect against pests. A greenhouse provides a customizable atmosphere for whatever you desire to grow. If that’s tropical fruits or exotic flowers, a greenhouse is a must in your gardener world.

Just follow these 8 steps and you’ll have a recycled and cost-effective greenhouse!

Materials

  • 4″ x 4″ wooden posts (4 for each corner)
  • 2″ x 2″ timber (exact amount and measurements in the link)
  • Hinges for door
  • 4 bags of Postcrete
  • Gravel/ slabs/ mulch matting
  • Garden Canes
  • about 1,500 plastic bottles (2 liters or 1.5 liters)

1. Collection

No one wants to drink 1,500 bottles of soda to collect these. It might be a bit hard to find 1,500 plastic bottles just looking inside of your own home. But if you reach out to local recycling plants or another large source for plastic bottles that could help. This project was done with 2-liter bottles but can also be done with 1.5-liter plastic bottles.

2. Wash & Cut

Once you’ve gathered all 1,500 plastic bottles wash them thoroughly and remove all labels. You’ll cut off the bottoms and discard the bottle caps.

3. Build Foundation

Set up four of your 4″ x 4″ wooden posts for each corner into the concrete. You’ll want to spread mulch matting inside to prevent weeds.

4. Builds Frame

Using the 2″ x 2″ timber you will create frames for each side of the greenhouse including the door side. Then screw each of the corners of the frame together but don’t attach entirely quite yet.

5. String Those Bottles

To create the walls themselves, you’ll want to stack one on top of another onto the garden beams. Your final product will look like a clear beam.

6. Attach

Then you’ll keep all of the bottle beams together by stapling the ends with fencing staples. You want to put as many bottles as possible onto a beam to keep it locked in.

7. Vertical Time

Now it’s time to build those walls and begin placing each beam vertically onto the foundation. Screw them each beam into the foundation

8. Build Door and Roof

This is when you decide what kind of roof you’d like, either flat or sloped. These greenhouse builders recommend a sloped roof and you’ll just attach each beam just like the walls.

Now you’ve got yourself a nice overview of how to build a recycled greenhouse. These brief instructions give you lots of room to learn and create an authentic greenhouse for you and your family.
