During quarantine, there are many personal errands that you’ve surely been missing to do. It can be a trip to the nail salon, barbershop, or even to the dermatologist who takes care of your skin. This is probably the main reason why a lot of us are clinging to DIY stuff to get by.

It is a different story when it comes to our skin.

There are plenty of DIY or at-home skincare products or ingredients that we can try at home. However, we have to make sure that they are safe for our skin. We have to do further research from reliable sites about the things that we put on our skin.

If not, this horrifying thing might happen to you too.

A nurse practitioner namely Zoe Gazola posted about the downside of using do-it-yourself at-home chemical peel treatments. She works at a clinic in NYC and has 12-year experience in medical skincare procedures. With that being said, she certainly knows what are the do’s and don’ts when the topic is about skincare.

It is a skin resurfacing procedure using a chemical solution to be applied to the skin. It is being used to remedy skin discoloration, scars, and wrinkles on the face. Many people get interested to try it to have clearer skin.

It can be your skin savior but can also be dangerous.

Particularly the DIY ones and doing it without consulting a professional. Aside from being educated about its risks like redness and burning sensation, there are many things to keep in mind.

Zoe posted about the perilous effects of the DIY peel treatment and they are horrific!

She shared photos of a woman who got a 3rd-degree chemical burn upon using this treatment at home.

“DIY 3rd degree chemical burn. so keep ordering TCA illegally online and watching YouTube videos and joining these toxic Facebook tribe groups,” Zoe wrote.

She also mentioned that this terrible case will not result in a desirable skin that you can expect from peel treatments that are being done by professionals.

“I worked in the burn ICU for a couple years and NONE of these ever resulted in a “glow up.” These DESPERATE measures people take are sure to leave a lifetime impression that’s for sure,” she added.

In an interview with BuzzFeed News, Zoe talked about how rampant these DIY peel treatments are online especially during the quarantine. Some of the women who bought these illegal chemical peels online consult her about it.

“I’ve had a lot of women reach out to me asking for advice on what to do [after] they’ve bought illegal chemical peels online and on Amazon and stuff.”

These images that she posted were from a third party who can be found on a private Facebook group. Sadly, these FB groups encourage women to try DIY treatments at home. These are procedures that are very risky including peels and injectables.

How did Zoe find out about these Facebook groups’ activities?

She did this clever thing- and that was joining these groups secretly and using a different name. She found out that many women are doing self-medication in their complications – which is really dangerous because seeking professional treatment is the safest thing to do.

Zoe also gave more details about the photos that she posted on Instagram.

“She had done an at-home 35% TCA peel. Thirty-five percent is extremely high and it’s dangerous. It could only be done by a doctor or nurse.”

Moreover, Zoe gave her two cents about this matter and a piece of advice to those people who wanted to try these risky treatments by themselves.

“I know a lot of people are really desperate to do everything and anything to be beautiful, to save a dollar. [But] it always, always, always costs triple the dollar amount to get something corrected.”

She is right. It’s okay to spend some bucks if you want to achieve great results and avoid getting dangerous effects. After all, it is your skin that you are investing in – it will always be worth it.
