Easy and nifty DIY method to make your pillows bright, white, and clean again

Whenever it’s time to clean the bedsheets it can be quite surprising to see what’s underneath those pillowcases. What used to be a white fluffy pillow has turned into some sort of horrid yellow tie-dye… Why?! Well it’s not the cutest answer but sweat has everything to do with it. Those cozy pillows also collect dust, dead skin, and even bed bugs.

Instead of throwing those rather expensive pillows in the trash, there is a way to get them looking brand new again! Just follow these simple steps.

Things You Need:

  • 1/2 cup Borax
  • 1 cup bleach
  • 1 cup regular laundry detergent
  • 1 cup dish detergent

Most of these items are laying around your house somewhere which makes this DIY super simple. It’s also extremely satisfying to watch your pillows go from EW to AWH again. To get your pillow bright and white you’ll need to throw them in the washing machine. So make sure to check the tag on your pillowcases to make sure they are machine-washable which most cotton pillows are.

First Things First

You want to soak your yellow pillows in hot water. You can use your bathtub or anything that fits your pillows nicely. Some washers even have a soaking button to make the process easy. Doing this first step helps lift the stains when combining the cleaning mixture later.

Making The Potion

Alright, it’s time to make the mixture, which is super simple! You’ll want to bring a large pot of water to a boil. As soon as it’s boiling add the Borax and both detergents to the boiling water and stir constantly until all of it is dissolved. If you’d rather not use your favorite spaghetti pot for this, just pour the boiling water into a bucket with the Borax and both detergents inside.

Put The Potion To Work

Now since you’ve made the mixture, you’ll want to add this to wherever you have your pillows soaking. If that’s your washing machine or bathtub you’ll want to add the cup of bleach in this step and soak for 15 minutes. Flip the pillows over and soak for another 15 minutes.

Washing Time

When the pillows have been soaked in the solution completely you’ll want to throw them in the washing machine if you haven’t already. Put them on a full washing cycle and it’s recommended to have them on a second rinse cycle if your washer has that.

Dry Them Out

You want to make sure those squeaky clean pillows get completely dry before putting them on the bed. Down pillows can be put in the dryer on the “air” setting it’s also safe to dry synthetic pillows on low heat. But you can also air dry them if none of those is an option.

A helpful tip to get those pillows fluffy again is to add some tennis balls in the dryer!

FOAM PILLOW alternative

For those nice foam pillows, you won’t want to use the intense mixture used for regular cotton pillows. But there is a way to get those pillows looking bright again. Just throw a maximum of 2 in the washer with gentle laundry detergent and choose the most delicate wash cycle. After 5 minutes put them on the spin cycle and remove when damp (not soaked) and dry on the lowest setting.
