Woman shares simple, DIY weed-killer recipe that works better than the store brands
Weeds are a menace in yards all over the world. Most people turn to commercial weedkillers to get rid of them. But this DIY weedkiller is cheaper, and it really works!
Everyone hates weeds. You can either spend ages digging them out of the ground, spray them, chop them or ignore them.
Of course, if you ignore weeds, they only get worse. If you chop them, they grow back.
The easiest solution is using weedkiller. If you do this, you’re spraying a bunch of harmful chemicals all over the yard, unless you make this simple weedkiller at home.
All you need to make an effective weedkiller are three things: vinegar, dish soap and Epsom salt.
Yes, dish soap does have chemicals in it. But we use those chemicals to wash our dishes every day! It’s safe to spray in the yard, in that case.
These items can be purchased very cheaply from any supermarket, meaning that almost anyone anywhere can make this weedkiller.
To make this effective weedkiller, you need one gallon of the vinegar, one-quarter cup of the dish soap and two cups of Epsom salt (you can also substitute it with regular salt.)
Begin making the weedkiller by getting a large container and pouring the salt into it. Then pour in the vinegar. Shake the vinegar and salt. Let the shaken salt and vinegar sit for an hour so the vinegar absorbs all the salt.
Then add the dish soap and shake the container again. Once all the items are combined, pour our the mixture into a spray bottle.
Then spray at all the weeds! The weedkiller doesn’t work right away. Instead, it slowly kills them over the course of a day. Larger weeds may need multiple sprays before they completely die.
Of course, make sure that none of the plants you like get sprayed!
It’s best to spray this weedkiller on a sunny day, as the sun will help to kill the weeds.
After that, all you need to do is throw away the dead weeds and enjoy your yard!
Of course, there are a few other things you can do to eradicate your weed problem. If you have a whole patch of weeds, you can cover them with newspaper.
If you put 10 layers of sheets over the weeds, they will be starved of sunlight and oxygen, killing them. You can slightly wet the newspaper and heap mulch on top of it to keep the sheets in place.
An even cheaper and chemical-free weedkiller is water. Of course, room temperature water will only nourish the weeds. Instead, boil the water first.
Then just pour the boiling water on the weeds. This solution is great, because it requires no mixing or other complex preparations. Just boil up a kettle and treat the weeds like medieval torture victims.
And if you want to stop weeds from appearing around your already existing plants, just spread corn gluten meal around them. This prevents weed seeds from growing!
