Kids wake up from surgery to notice doctor makes colorful bandages to help with recovery

Getting any kind of hospital work done is stressful, especially when youâre left with healing scars from post-op surgeries. This artistic doctor goes out of his way to give his kid patients something to be excited about when they wake up from surgery, in the form of adorable bandage drawingsâ.
This is incredible, what an amazing doctor!

Doctor takes the internet by storm with his soothing art for children whoâve just gone through surgery
Dr. Parry is based in Akron, Ohio, heâs been practicing medicine for 30-years, the past 9 at the Childrenâs Hospital. He has a unique approach to help kids get more comfortable during what could be very traumatic times. By drawing cartoons and their bandages, heâs able to take their minds off of the wounds underneath.

What inspired him? Many years ago, when Dr. Parry was still in residency, he saw another doctor, Dr. Stafford, cutting out sharks and hearts.
âMy first reaction when I initially saw him cut out these hearts and sharks was, âWhat is he doing? Hey, thatâs kind of neat. I especially liked the reactions of the parents and the patients when they saw his artwork. The smiles distracted everyone from the surgery.â Dr. Perry told The Washington Post

Dr. Parry asks for information during the pre-op process, to help him personalize the artwork for each child
Usually, pre-op appointments are no fun for kids, but not in Dr. Parryâs office. The compassionate MD finds out what his young patientsâ favorite cartoon or characters are, then, he draws it on their bandages.

When the kids wake up from surgery, they see their favorite cartoon instead of an ugly bandage and it makes them forget about whatâs underneath. Being that no parent likes to see their child sad, the artwork also helps take the parentsâ minds off of the ordeal.

Each illustration only takes Dr. Parry about 5-minutes to do, but every single one makes a world of difference for the kids
Whether itâs Batman, a princess, or any other random characters,â the purpose of each drawing is to help the kids through the tuff time. The whole staff gets in on the action, visiting the children to see what art they had drawn on their bandages.

âItâs been a pretty special thing, for everyone. Itâs fun for me to do, the parents and the children really enjoy it and even the whole medical staff likes to get in on it, Whenever one of my kids arrive in the recovery room, the nurses all like to take a look to see what dressing the child got. I think it just makes everyone, me included, feel good.â Dr. Parry told CNN

According to hospital records, Dr. Parry has done more than 10,000 surgeries and counting
What an amazing way to put children going through surgery at ease, not to mention, it helps the adults who have the difficult task of being there for their children after theyâve been operated on.

The world needs more doctors like Dr. Parry, not only does he make a huge difference in the work he does, but he also goes above and beyond for his fragile patients and their families. To see his drawing in action, watch the video below!
