Doctors paste photos of their smiling faces on their protective suits to reassure patients

The crisis of the global pandemic has caused deep measures of tension and uncertainty in everyone.

And while many of us are defaulting to fear, essential workers are working hard to support us around the clock and remind us that we’re not alone in the fight.

Each day, they continue to risk their own health to protect and ensure the safety of those around them. Surrounded by nothing but panic and fear, their dedication is brave, selfless and tireless.

And while their environment may seem daunting and the circumstances downright grave at times, this is not stopping them from delivering positivity and smiles.

One doctor from San Diego is gaining rapid recognition for his lightness of heart in these turbulent times.

Robertino, a respiratory therapist at Scripps Mercy Hospital, recently shared a picture of himself on Instagram wearing his Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

But what caught the eye of the internet was sitting neatly on the outside of his suit.

It was a picture of himself smiling.

The doctor had gotten the picture laminated and pasted it to the outside of his protective suit along with his credentials.

The doctor captioned his post:

“Yesterday, I felt bad for my patients in ER when I would come in the room with my face covered in PPE. A reassuring smile makes a big difference to a scared patient. So today I made a giant laminated badge for my PPE. So my patients can see a reassuring and comforting smile.”

Many were instantly moved by Robertino’s generosity of spirit.

The doctor’s heartfelt act of kindness echoed across the internet. His post attracted over 27 thousand likes and over two thousand comments.

One person commented:

“I imagine it would be scary to be surrounded by the people in hazmat-like gear. It probably gives off a terrifying feeling or at least an uncomfortable one. This is a beautiful thing to do.”

Another person praised him:

“Awesome idea. It connects the patient to the physician in a more intimate and humane way. I hope this goes viral and starts a trend. God bless.”

And in fact, Robertino’s idea did start a trend! His viral post inspired other doctors working in US hospitals to follow his example.
