In the middle of the novel coronavirus outbreak, and when the self-quarantining at home started, a lot of people decided to take in a couple of pets from a shelter to either foster them or adopt them permanently. After all, it’s much easier to get bored when you’re confined to your home all day.

Kendal Benken was one of those people.

She decided to take care of three adorable kittens for a while, who needed care and bottle feeding almost the entire day.

She loves having cute kittens around and offered to help out.

“The COVID-19 outbreak hit, and I was sheltering at home,” the woman said to The Dodo. “I was looking for something to do. Who doesn’t enjoy cute little kittens? I saw it as a great opportunity.”

Kendal was quickly approved as a foster mom for these three kittens who were previously residing at the Jelly’s Place animal shelter in San Pablo, California.

She named them Ed, Prissy, and Louie.

When Kendal brought the feline furry four-footers back home with her, there was someone there who seemed extremely interested in her new housemates.

Immediately, her loveable 105-pound dog, Truvy, “claimed” the kittens.

Apparently, she wanted to be their mom instead, and she was ready to start right away.

“It’s so funny, when I brought them in she was immediately like, ‘Let me at ’em,'” Kendall told. “She took to them immediately. They’re her babies.”

This adorable pooch looks after the kittens and plays around with them pretty much around the clock.

She acts like a very protective mom and won’t let them out of her sight, just to make sure they’re okay. In fact, sometimes the dog is even a bit too protective, as Truvy isn’t always pleased when her human mommy tries to bottle-feed them.

It’s an absolutely hilarious and adorable sight to behold.

“When I was trying to get the feedings done I’d have to put her out of the room, she would try to manage me,” the woman said. “When I’d let her back in, she would run over, check them, clean them and smell them. She has taken such ownership of them. She takes that role very seriously.”

Truvy sees herself as the mommy of these kittens, and she won’t take no for an answer!

“She tries to keep the other dogs away,” Kendall said. “She will guard them, stand in front of them and push the other dogs out of the way. If another dog gets their nose in there while she’s cleaning the kittens, she will snap at the other dogs. She will give them a stern warning they are hers.”

One day, the dog even started hiding the kittens, just so she could have them all to herself.

Truvy apparently wasn’t happy with the fact that Kendal and the other people in the house started interfering with her mommy-tasks.

“She was taking them from the crate and putting them behind the dresser in my bedroom. She is obsessed and won’t leave them alone. She wants to keep treating them like they’re her babies.”

Truvy’s motherly instinct may be a form of paying it forward since she was a rescue pup herself and knows what’s it’s like to live at the shelter.

The sweet Labrador dog ended up at a local shelter in Texas when she was only five weeks old.

Kendal lived there at the time and she instantly fell in love with Truvy when they met.

The poor dog actually got bitten by a copperhead snake and needed a foster home where she could be nursed back to health. Kendall was more than willing to do so and eventually adopted her too.

The three kittens will have to leave the home and be put up for adoption soon, but mom promised to foster more kittens regularly.

“Truvy will be sad when they do go, but I hope to replace them with a new litter we can foster,” she. “It’s win-win: Truvy gets to be a mama, and the kittens get exposure to dogs. It makes them more adoptable. They’re not afraid of her. She’s always gentle and kind.”
