People find themselves in tough positions all the time. But it’s how we act when we’re in a bad situation that sometimes shows our true character.

By now we hope that people know just how many shelters and rescue organizations are out there and that it’s never ok to abandon your pet in a parking lot. It’s cruel.

When a dog has puppies and owners don’t know what to do, the first step is to take responsibility for not having them spayed. The second is to ask for help if you need it.

A family in need

Sadly, someone near Abilene, Texas didn’t have the good sense to do that in April of 2020. So instead, they took their 5-year-old boxer and her 9 puppies and dumped them in a parking lot in a cardboard box hoping someone else would solve their problem.

The puppies were just two weeks old when they were tossed outside the North Side Baptist Church on April 26, 2020. It was a hard month for everyone with quarantine orders coming down. But it was no excuse for such a heartless decision.

Luckily, someone found the dogs, snapped a photo, and uploaded it to social medial. That’s when Misty Boerger of Paw Angel Animal Rescue saw it.

“I saw the picture and it just broke my heart and I called Angel and we went and rescued the dogs,” she told KTXS News.

Finally a friendly face

Misty Boerger went and fetched the dogs and took them to Angel Urban in the backseat of her car.

“I just don’t know how someone could do that, leaving momma and two-week-old babies,” said Boerger.

It turns out the mother dog also needed vet care. She hadn’t had a caring family before she had her puppies either.

“We found lots of wounds on her that were opened and draining.”

When they got the group medical care, they found a tumor in one of the puppy’s throats and she had to be euthanized.

A safe place

The rescue named the mama dog Dory and vowed to care for her and her surviving pups until they were ready to be adopted into loving homes.

After some time spent healing, the dogs were socialized so they could become good pets in loving homes.

And boy were they a cute little family!

Of course, the pandemic made adoption events a lot harder, so the puppies were around for a few weeks longer than normal. But they got lots of special attention from volunteers and the shelter raised nearly $2000 for their care.

From Dory to Diva

After the puppies were safe to be on their own, sweet Dory was the first to be adopted into a loving home where she’s still thriving!

In fact, she has her own Facebook page, called From Dumped to Diva: Dory’s Story where you can follow along with her adventures.

The page not only gives those concerned updates on mama but on her puppies as well as they all get adopted.

We’re so relieved to see a happy ending for this family.
