Firefighters called for rescue mission – find a German shepherd and tortoise stuck in a hole

Dogs are known for easily becoming friends with other people and animals. Some of their friendships are pretty odd, though. The weirdest has to be a friendship between a dog and tortoise from San Bernardino, California.

Firefighters were called out to a home in the area and were greeted by an unusual sight, a German shepherd, and a tortoise stuck in a hole together.

The 70-pound tortoise, named Godzilla, had dug a tunnel under a wall in his owner’s backyard. Godzilla then decided to try the tunnel out, which was six feet in length. Of course, his buddy Taylor, a German shepherd, had to get in there with him.

It was definitely one of the oddest things that Captain Jeremy Kern had seen during his time with the San Bernardino County Fire Department

“It appears that the dog had brought a blanket into the tunnel, resulting in the dog, blanket, and tortoise becoming wedged and entangled,” Kern said in a Facebook post.

The owner of the two partners in crime, Don Arbalo, also got stuck in the hole when he tried to extract them. Fortunately, he was able to get out right before the firefighters arrived. Once there, firefighters had some difficulty extracting the dog and the tortoise from the hole.

It seems that Godzilla kept getting in the way.

As rescue workers gathered around the hole, Taylor can be heard barking on a video shot of the incident. Arbalo’s wife, Tracy, can be heard calling down to the dog to settle down. Taylor continued to yelp as the rescuers worked to free the two. Finally, though, their efforts paid off.

“Firefighters used tools in order to remove dirt from around the animals, along with coaxing the tortoise with lettuce in order to encourage the animal to move,” Kern said. “In about 10 minutes, firefighters were able to un-wedge the animals and extract them out of the tunnel.”

The two were removed successfully and were unharmed. Hopefully, the next time the friends decide to go on an adventure together, they choose a location that is a little roomier.

Other odd animal friendships

Taylor and Godzilla are not the first odd animal pairing. Over the years, dogs and other animals have become friends, including Donald, the duck, and Rusty, the cocker spaniel. The two pals would go for swims in the water together, often with Donald riding on the dog’s back.

Another strange animal friendship was between Tommy, a golden retriever, and Salati, a leopard. The two could often be found snuggling and playing together at their family’s country retreat.
