Dog becomes friends with deer over the fence and they visit every day
It is unlikely for a home pet to be friends with a wild animal, let alone build an unbreakable bond with them.
It is an animal’s nature to be protective of its family and territory, this goes both for home pets and wild animals. That’s why when dog owner Hollister Faulconer saw her pooch making friends with a deer, she was utterly shocked.

It was nine years ago when Faulconer rescued her dog, Huey, and since then, the two have been inseparable. There’s absolutely no one and nothing that could possibly come between them. The adorable dog is also very protective of his human mom, that’s the main reason why Faulconer got surprised by how Huey interacted with their wild guest.
It all started when Faulconer started to notice the deer lurking around outside their yard. It would usually come to sneak and treat itself to their bird feeder that’s situated just outside their fence. But instead of fending off the young deer, the homeowner was charmed by its bravery to come near their premise that’s obviously out of the deer’s natural habitat.
Despite Huey’s protective behavior, he didn’t see the little deer as a threat.
“Huey was a little confused at first, and definitely cautious,” Faulconer told The Dodo. “I would just talk to them both and make sure they both felt safe. Slowly, they just started talking over the fence!”
The deer didn’t stop from dropping by the Faulconer’s residence, it would usually come and visit a couple of times a week. They never shoo the wild animal away and they welcomed it wholeheartedly since the deer brought them no harm from the beginning.
The deer became their regular visitor and they eventually named her Sassafras. Turns out, those everyday visits weren’t just for the bird feeder but were also because of Huey. Faulconer soon noticed that her dog and the deer started bonding together, it took a couple of visits more before the two became the best of friends.
Huey and Sassafras would usually exchange sniffs over the fence and it almost looks like they are telling each other stories. The scene is absolutely adorable, and for those who haven’t seen a deer in ages, seeing them befriending a dog would definitely fascinate your bare-naked eyes.
Sometimes, Sassafras would even bring her kiddos with her.
It looks like she also wants Huey to be friends with her fawns, there are times when the deer would bring her children during her visits to the Faulconer’s residence.
“It’s absolutely adorable,” said Faulconer. “I love watching them.”
Their friendship is really something that we, humans, should be doing because we are often divided by our race and skin color. Look at these two different creatures, a dog and a deer, animals from two different species that became friends despite their differences.
In fact, when Faulconer uploaded the video of Huey and Sassafras’ encounter on her Instagram account, someone thought it was edited or photoshopped.
“Okay after looking at this again is this real? Did you really record this? Is that your dog? Did this really happen? Photoshop? Omg,” the commenter wrote.
