Desperate dog begs cop to follow him — moments later, they both become heroes
Most dogs are loyal to their owners, even to a fault in some cases. There have been many stories of a dog coming to their owner’s rescue in life-threatening situations.
And while the first responders are rightfully hailed as heroes for the role they play in saving lives, people should also thank the animals who loved their owners so much that they went that extra step and were there for them in a big way.
One case in particular illustrates this point perfectly.
A dog in distress
It all started when police Officer Jeff Gonzalez was on patrol one morning in Autumn Ridge, Wisconsin. As he drove down the road, he came across a peculiar sight. A black Labrador was pacing frantically back and forth on the sidewalk.
Thinking the dog was lost, Gonzalez decided to stop and see if he could help.
John Boy tries to get Officer Gonzalez to follow him
When the dog, named John Boy, saw Gonzalez in the car, he started to bark as if he was trying to get the police officer’s attention. As Officer Gonzalez rolled down his window, John Boy started to wag his tail as if he knew the officer was there to help him.
As soon as Gonzalez got out of his car, John Boy started running before stopping and looking back to see if Gonzalez was following him. This made it clear to the police officer that the dog wanted him to follow him. Complying, Gonzalez followed John Boy to a nearby house. On the front porch, a woman sat, slumped over in her chair.
“I thought she was dead. And when I went up, she was very cold to the touch. Her lips were blue. But I was able to determine she was breathing and had a pulse,” Gonzalez told Fox 6 News. “I called for assistance, and my partner was close. So together we got her in the house.”
Officer Gonzalez calls for help
Able to identify the woman as Krystal Wendt, Gonzalez reached out to her daughter and sister. They informed him that Wendt had a heart condition, which had more than likely caused her to collapse.
Soon, the ambulance arrived and Wendt was rushed to the hospital.
There were two heroes in this story
Wendt’s daughter, Tianne, was suspired that John Boy had played such a crucial role in saving her mom. The dog had been returned to the shelter three times before her mom had adopted him. The dog and his owner were very dedicated to each other, and John Boy had grown very protective of Wendt.
And while Officer Gonzalez has been hailed as the hero in this story, he also thinks a lot of the credit should go to John Boy. Without his efforts, chances are that Wendt would not have made it. In either case, Tianne thanked the hero dog by giving him a hug and lots of scratches behind his ears.
