In summer 2017, a drought hit the country of Peru. This affected everyone, from the citizens of the country to the animals who lived there, including the stray animals that live on the streets of the country’s cities.

Many of these stray animals died because they couldn’t find the water they needed to survive. One dog, in the city of Lima, took matters into his own paws after days without water.

A dog begs for water

In a video shot on the streets of the city, a homeless dog is featured. In his mouth, he carries a discarded bucket. He walks around, begging the people around him for a drink. His plight is a perfect example of what strays have to go through each day just to survive.

And even though it was filmed years ago, it is a perfect reminder of this struggle.

Residents take pity on the dog

Fortunately, some of the area residents took pity on the dog, pouring some water into his bucket. He must have been extremely thirsty because even though he had water, he continued to beg those passing him by for more.

This heartbreaking sight captured the hearts of many online.

A pat on the head

It must have also touched the hearts of the people witnessing the scene in person. One stranger patted the dog on the head to comfort him.

This same stranger tried to get him to put the bucket down, but the dog refused. He knew how much he needed the water and didn’t want the bucket and its contents taken from him.

SPCA International

This dog’s struggle to survive is the sad reality of many of the animals living on the streets of Lima, Peru, and elsewhere. These animals beg for food and water every day and often have to fend for themselves. Fortunately, organizations, such as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) International, and local shelters and rescues are helping homeless animals around the globe.

As a part of its mission, SPCA International seeks to advance the safety and wellbeing of animals. They do this through supporting local shelters, supplying necessary medical care for homeless animals, and sponsoring spay and neuter programs, as well as highlighting the issues faced by animals around the world.

In addition to SPCA International, programs, such as Project Peru, try to help the animals living on the streets of the South American country.
