All of us go through our share of pain and sadness.

And on some of these moments, there is a different kind of companionship that we yearn for because a human just can’t understand. While our friends and family meant well, there are just times that all you need is a dog.

This is exactly what happened with Madison Palm and her adorable corgi Cora.

In a post shared last 2018, the little dog captured hearts with her simple act of kindness. Palm always knew Cora was special, and it was one of the reasons why she had her certified as a therapy dog.

At first, Cora was trained to help Palm with her anxieties.

But Palm would later realize that Cora was helpful not only to her but to others as well. The two of them were bound for Alaska to visit Palm’s mother and were flying from Idaho.

Before crossing the Canadian airspace, Palm and Cora stayed in Seattle for a layover. As they were waiting for their flight, Cora quietly tip-toed away from her and found herself at the feet of a stranger.

When Palm finally noticed what was going on, Cora was already enjoying the ear scratches.

“Before I could even call her she was already at his feet being loved on. I asked him if she was bothering him,” Palm said to TODAY.

But what the man said made her realize how special Cora truly is. The man shared he lost his dog just the night before. Even if she couldn’t talk to the man, Cora somehow understood what the man was going through. Cora offered him comfort that humans just can’t give.

She stayed with the man and Palm just watched her dog bring a smile to someone’s face, especially someone who is in deep pain.

“I truly think she has a gift. She knows who is hurting and she knows who needs her,” she shared with TODAY. “Once he told me that his dog passed away I looked at Cora and I thought to myself, ‘You are so amazing. How did I get so lucky?'”

To answer her question, Palm got lucky because she chose to love Cora.

As adorable as she is now, Cora didn’t grow up in a loving household. She was being given up for adoption when Palm encountered the post through a friend. She was killing her owner’s chickens so the family was giving her up to the first taker.

Palm left work right away to meet Cora.

There she learned that Cora was not being fed properly and was kept outside nearly her whole life. She has never been to a vet, she didn’t even have a cute collar or a tag with her name on it. Her dinner is comprised of scrap food that’s just thrown into the yard.

She is a dog full of love but she grew up thinking how she deserved being kept like this. At that moment, Palm knew she had to bring Cora home with her.

After looking for a new place for her two dogs, she and Cora became pretty much inseparable.

Through Cora’s transformation, Palm witnessed her dog’s capacity for compassion and understanding. And even if she grew up unloved, Cora lived giving love, especially to the grieving stranger in the airport.

“I’ve never had a doubt that Cora can sense those who are hurting and those who need companionship and love. She is a natural born therapy dog in every way. I am so blessed to call her my dog.” Palm said in her Facebook post.
