Dog caught joyriding in tiny car has run-in with local law enforcement

We all know just how goofy our dogs can be sometimes. In fact, sometimes it seems like they don’t even realize they’re a dog at all! They like to eat what people eat, go where people go, and even sometimes sit or stand like their hoomans.

By far, one of the funniest outcomes of this particular doggy behavior is when your dog decides that they want to take a ride in the driver’s seat.

If you have a dog, then it’s likely you already know exactly what we’re talking about. Every time you get behind the driver’s wheel and start that engine, they leap over the arm you try to block them with and crawl right into your lap.

While we would all love to think it’s just because our furbabies want to be so close to us, we all know the truth. Your dog wants to be in control.

It doesn’t even matter if it’s a big car, a little car, or even if it’s a boat. So long as it can be steered, our four-footed pals clearly think that they should be in charge of the wheel, and we can’t blame them one bit…or can we?

This was the dilemma one police officer was faced with in Heidelberg West Australia when she spotted a dog driving a tiny car…completely alone!

It was obvious to the officer and her partner that the furry little speedster was out for a joyride. According to Officer Lynda Giblett, it was pretty suspicious and she felt compelled to go and “check it out”.

Of course we had to stop and check it out. We couldn’t believe our eyes,” the Victoria police officer explained in an interview with the Herald Sun just a few days after the incident.

So, what was the stated reason for pulling the dog citizen over? Driving under the influence…of cuteness!

Caught driving under the influence of cuteness,” the Victoria Police wrote in a caption to the photo on their Facebook page.

Once she had the scruffy little cruiser pulled to the side, she peered in for a closer look.

While it isn’t necessarily illegal to drive a tiny car on the sidewalk, it is illegal to drive without sight or hearing. The little dog she had pulled over’s name is Buddy, a 15-year-old pup that’s both deaf and blind. Fortunately, all was revealed when Buddy’s mom, Teri, came walking up after the officer pulled the tiny Mercedes Binz over. Terri, who is also deaf, explained that her dog’s daily joyrides are the safest and easiest way for him to get out of the house and get some fresh air.

The senior dog, who’s pushing 110 in doggy years, can’t exercise as much as he used to.

At least this way, he still gets to enjoy a cruise through his neighborhood. Though Officer Giblett did pull Buddy over when he was cruising down the sidewalk, she didn’t end up ticketing him for his over-the-top cuteness. Instead, she posed for a quick selfie with the little cruiser and his hooman before letting him roll on with his drive.

It absolutely made our day,” Giblett said.

Lead Constable Giblett actually works with Crime Scene Services and so likely never would have been able to give Buddy a ticket in the first place. On the other hand, we don’t blame her a bit for coming up with an excuse to meet the cutie.
