Dog comforts sick horse to let him know he has a friend

Carolina Equine Rescue and Assistance (CERA) is a non-profit organization that cares for abused, abandoned, and neglected horses. However, the farm also has a variety of dogs, cats, pigs, and goats on the property as well. One dog, in particular, named Molly, is the official greeter at the farm. So, when Sammie, a neglected and emaciated miniature horse, arrived, Molly was one of the first to greet him.

Three-year-old Molly seemed to sense right away that the abused horse needed a friend – and Molly was ready to be that comfort!

Molly loves all of the animals on the farm, and she especially likes to make them feel welcome when they first arrive at the animal sanctuary.

“She just goes up with a wagging tail, and sniffs them and licks them like a long-lost friend,” Darlene Kindle, founder of CERA, told The Dodo.

Sammie arrives in a horrible condition

Barely skin and bones, Sammie, the silver dapple miniature horse, had been found by animal control officers wandering the streets of South Carolina. The officers knew the importance of getting the proper treatment if he was going to survive.

Sammie was 100 pounds underweight

A local veterinarian assessed Sammie’s condition and found that he was 100 pounds underweight. He also had serious dental problems and was believed to be suffering from a birth defect that affected his hind legs. Due to these issues, the vet suggested that Sammie be euthanized, especially if animal control couldn’t find a shelter to take him in.

Fortunately, Kindle was happy to take Sammie in at CERA. She hoped to later find him a permanent home after he was treated, of course. Before taking him in, however, Kindle had a few questions for Sammie’s vet:

“I asked him a whole bunch of questions, and my last question to him was, ‘Does he have the will to live in his eyes?’” Kindle said. “The vet immediately said, ‘Yes,’ and I said, ‘OK, I’ll take him. If he’s willing to fight the fight, then I’ll help him do that.’”

Sammie was eager to get better

After Sammie arrived on the farm, Kindle was unsure about how things would play out. Soon, however, Sammie proved to her that he was eager to get better. “He immediately put his head to the ground and started gobbling grass,” Kindle said.

Molly was her usual self

Molly the golden retriever was there to greet Sammie as he arrived, but the horse was too busy eating to pay her much attention at first. However, Molly did make a follow-up visit later on to say her usual hello and to make sure that Sammie knew that he was welcome.

“It was later that evening, after Sammie got bedded down — I don’t sleep well at night so I was out here sitting in the rocking chair — and Molly was with me and she just walked over to him,” Kindle said.

Kindle was able to capture the moment on her phone and posted it to the organization’s Facebook page. The video ended up getting over 21,000 likes and 16,000 shares, as well as an astounding 1.5 million views.
