Surveillance footage shows dog escaping kennel to comfort crying puppies

People frequently claim that a mother’s love is unparalleled, and this doesn’t only apply to humans.

Maggie, an Australian shepherd cross, heard the screams of two rescue pups one Friday night when she was a guest at Barker’s Pet Motel and Grooming in Alberta, Canada.

The mother dog understood that the babies were anxious.

She probably knows how nerve-wracking spending the first night alone at the pet hotel feels.

About two weeks prior to that evening, Maggie, who was newly adopted from the Edmonton Humane Society, had her own puppies weaned from her. When the two nine-week-old puppies were delivered there by the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS) she had already been boarding at Barker’s for more than a week.

The pups might have reminded her of her babies.

When AARCS and Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) don’t have enough foster homes available, the pet hotel frequently takes in dogs.

That evening, Sandi Aldred, the proprietor of Barker’s, and her family left after putting the pups to sleep in their kennel. Sandi used her phone to check in on the pet hotel while they were out for dinner.

She opened the facility’s CCTV cameras’ live stream and saw an unexpected scenario.

When the family departed, Maggie was neatly locked up in her kennel and was sitting in the hallway outside the pen housing the newborn puppies. The dog appeared to be trying to get as close to the puppies as possible as she paced back and forth to nearby pens, but she would always come back to her station.

When Sandi and her family viewed all of the security footage, they saw that Maggie had pushed aside the water dish that was integrated into the entrance of her kennel.

As a result, she was able to force herself out of the opening.

“We watched her on the surveillance cameras and she went straight around and she found their room. She paid them a lot of attention and you could see her little tail wagging. And she’d do the little bow down to them and poke them through the chainlink gate of their room. She just decided that was where she was going to stay until we came to get her,” Sandi recalled.

After supper, Sandi went back to Barker’s and was met by a very excited-looking Maggie.

“She came to me and she was really happy, and then she took me back to their room as if to say, ‘I really need to meet these puppies,'” she said.

Sandi allowed Maggie to enter the puppies’ kennel and observed as the group bonded. The bunch appeared so content to be together that she realized she had nothing to be concerned about.

Maggie reclined and let the puppies pet her.

Sandi permitted them to spend the night together after noticing how at ease they were. As a matter of fact, the group was still there the next day.

“The puppies needed her and she needed them. It was pretty perfect,” she remarked.

That day, Maggie’s owners arrived to pick her up.

When Sandi informed them about the dog’s kind deed, the two weren’t shocked because they already knew how kind-hearted their dog is.

They had adopted Maggie from the Edmonton Humane Society a few weeks previously. Maggie’s owners were too eager to form a relationship with her that they respectfully declined Sandi’s lighthearted plea to let her remain for a few extra days to be with the puppies.

They were excited to spend some time with their dog.

Fortunately for the puppies, Barker’s staff decided to show the young ones additional affection after Maggie left. In order for the puppies to experience a household setting, they would bring them home in the evenings.

Maggie, the two pups, and the events of this narrative took place in 2016, and they have long since found their permanent homes.
