You might wonder if your dog would remember you after being away for so long.

We know they would. There are many viral videos of dogs recognizing their former trainer, foster parent, military partner, etc. There’s that hint of hesitation, and then you see their tails wagging like there’s no tomorrow!

How do dogs do that?

Dogs do not have episodic memories like humans do. In fact, their episodic memories are relatively short. This is why when you introduce a new trick to them, they would not remember what it was a few moments after – not until you give them a treat.

That is because they rely on associative memories.

They associate identities, places, and events through their sense of smell, sight, and sound. Dogs use their senses to associate with us, especially our scent and faces. Their sense of smell is way powerful, and once they smell us from meters away, they immediately know we’re coming home.

But have you ever seen a dog that got too excited to see its human that it passed out?

Not literally, but if you watch the video, you’ll see. It’s more than the happy barks, tail wags, and endless kisses. It was such a dramatic reaction that it deserved an Oscar!

This is Casey, the most dramatic dog you’ll ever see.

The little schnauzer was away from her favorite hooman for two years. Yes, two long years. Rebecca Svetina had no choice but to leave her beloved pooch with her family in Murrysville, Pennsylvania, for work.

Rebecca had to move all the way to Slovenia for her career.

That’s a long time to get separated from your pet. Sure, Casey may have a different perception of time as humans but being away from each other for too long is unimaginable. Worse, Rebecca’s family flew to Bled, Slovenia, for her wedding but had to leave poor Casey behind.

After two years, Rebecca finally headed home but not without Casey’s theatrics.

She greeted her mum with loud, high-pitched wails as if asking her, “Where have you been, Mom? You were away for too long. How could you do that to me?” Rebecca couldn’t help but laugh (and cover her ears) as Casey continued to wail.

She went near her and hugged her but didn’t expect what would happen next.

Casey pretended to pass out! Such a dramatic dog.

Rebecca petted her to tell her it was okay, and she was home now – but still laughing at her crazy antics. The dog stood up and went to Rebecca’s father for some sort of support. What a sweetheart! Finally, she went down, returned to Rebecca, and let her carry her.

Netizens loved this scene so much and pointed out how a dog’s emotions can be like humans.

Some related their own experience with their dogs when they returned home, proving that Casey and Rebecca’s bond was very much relatable. However, others aired concerns about the pup’s health. The family said, however, that they had Casey checked with his vet and said she was totally fine. Just overly dramatic, that’s all!
