Owners wants dog put down – weren’t anticipating she’d get a second shot at life

It’s one thing to euthanize a senior dog when they suffer from a medical condition that dramatically impacts their quality of life. So, when an owner has an older dog put down, it is almost a mercy to end their pain and suffering. But to have a dog in the prime of their life euthanized is another thing entirely.

Fortunately, a group of rescuers weren’t in any hurry to put an “old” dog down, and now she has gotten a second chance at life.

Sidewalk Specials is a foster-based dog rescue that operates out of Cape Town, South Africa. Their main mission is to rescue dogs from abusive situations or off of euthanization lists. Also, they push a robust spay and neuter program.

In their minds, the fewer dogs that are out there, the fewer dogs that can find themselves in abusive situations.

While signing up dogs for this sterilization program, volunteers with the rescue were approached by a woman who wanted to have her old, sick dog euthanized.

Upon arriving at the location, rescuers discovered that the dog, named Unicorn, was not old at all, but was a one year old.

When rescuers went to pick up the collie mix, Unicorn tried her best to look ferocious in an attempt to scare the rescuers away. Of course, the rescuers saw through the ruse, and soon Unicorn had retreated to a hiding spot underneath a nearby house.

The rescuers were able to pull her out and transported Unicorn back to Cape Town to get checked out.

While Unicorn wasn’t old, she was sick. After getting checked out by the vets, it was discovered that she had a case of non-contagious mange and tick bite fever. And except for being hungry, she was skin and bones when they found her, she was healthy.

Fortunately, for Unicorn, the workers with Sidewalk Specials didn’t go along with her previous owner’s wishes.

Placing her in a foster home, Unicorn soon was healthy enough to be put up for adoption. She wouldn’t have to wait long, as a woman soon came in looking to adopt the sweet dog. Now, she gets to live a new life in a loving home, receiving the affection and care she deserves.

Unlike a typical animal shelter, Sidewalk Specials relies on foster homes to help care for and rehabilitate the dogs that the organization rescues. Sidewalk Specials feels that it is vitally important to adopt a dog from a shelter as opposed to buying one from a store because this can help cut down on the number of strays on the street.
