Dog hangs on for dear life on back of flatbed truck as owner drives 70 MPH

No one wants their dog to get hurt, especially when they take them for a ride in their car. And this is especially true if you put your dog in the bed of your pickup truck because if your dog isn’t properly secured, he could jump out while you’re driving. This can lead to serious injury or death in some cases.

After receiving a video of a dog precariously balancing in the back of a flatbed truck, the Humane Society of Utah has put out a call for public safety for all dogs.

In the video, a flatbed truck is shown driving down Interstate-15 in Utah at over 70 miles per hour. In the back, a dog balances on the surface of the bed of the truck with no restraints at all. This is just a disaster waiting to happen.

Up to 100,000 dogs die each year from accidents resulting from riding in the back bed of pickups, according to the American Humane Society. Despite this frightening figure, people continue to put their pets at risk every day.

Not all laws are on the side of animal lovers

Unfortunately, the law in Utah and other parts of the country regarding animal cruelty and abuse make it difficult to go after such neglectful dog owners. The only way that the dog owner could face charges is if the dog in the video was harmed or died while unrestrained.

According to the Humane Society, the organization has received dogs who have jumped or fallen out of the bed of a truck with their legs broken. Such surrenders happen usually because the dog owners cannot afford the medical bills from such injuries

The Humane Society of Utah continues to fight for tougher laws to prevent such tragedies from happening. The organization decided to post the video on its Facebook page to raise awareness and hopefully start a dialogue about the changes that need to be made to protect dogs more fully.

The best place for your dog when traveling is inside the vehicle. There, they can be properly restrained. If you must put them in the bed of a truck, place them in a crate that is strapped down. This effectively keeps them and the crate inside the bed of the truck.

Some people also use a leash to restrain their dogs when in the bed of a truck. Sadly, many dogs have become tangled when the truck stops suddenly or they still try to jump over the side. The result is strangulation as the dog hangs helplessly over the side of the truck bed.
