Vet expects Dalmatian to have three puppies – but they just keep coming
Back in 2017, a dog named Miley had the largest litter of Dalmatian puppies in Australian history.
In this case, it was relatively lucky she belonged to a breeder (although it’s always better to adopt, not shop!). Who else could care for so many little ones?!
Breeder Cecilia Langton-Bunker was told by vets that Miley and her mate Astro were expecting about 3 puppies.
But they couldn’t have been more wrong!
Langton-Bunker herself didn’t even believe it and figured the litter would be closer to 15.
(There’s been no explanation as to why preliminary medical scans showed just 3.)
2 becomes 20
Then, on May 18, after 13 hours of labor, Miley gave birth to a massive litter of 18 healthy puppies! And that matches the world record for any type of dog. (It even beats Perdita’s litter of 15 puppies in the Disney film 101 Dalmations!)
“We got to 16 and thought she was done. After 13-and-a-half hours of labour, it was quite amazing, she popped out another two,” her breeder told The Daily Mail.
Now, without help, a mother dog can’t possibly feed and care for that many pups. But the breeders did their duty and helped get the 12 females and 6 males through those critical first weeks.
And, of course, they had 18 collars tailor-made to distinguish the puppies from one another (for the benefit of the humans, of course).
Surprisingly superb
The idea of so many puppies running around might sound fun to some, but entails a tremendous amount of work. In fact, simply keeping them safe is a full-time job.
But Langton-Bunker said she “couldn’t be happier with the litter,” calling it all “absolutely superb.” Of course, to be fair, she will make quite a bit more profit from the “bonus” puppies.
Miley was reported to have been a model mom, while dad Astro was a bit overwhelmed.
Langton-Baker joked to The Daily Mail: “
“He’s a bit disconcerted by the 18 puppies running around, he’s like ‘Are these all mine?'”
That’s quite an introduction to parenthood, especially since the average size of a Dalmation litter is between 6 and 9 puppies.
Happily ever after
All of the puppies survived and thrived and a video of them growing up (before being sold) can be found down below. And not only was everyone in good spirits for those few months, it was downright inspiring to behold for those around to see it.
Langton-Baker told The Courier:
“The litter has been very inspirational to watch growing up and a great credit goes to Jade Martin, a midwife who has nurtured the puppies.”
CCDalmations, where Miley was bred, raises many an award-winning dog, reported on Facebook that by October Miley – whose formal name is “Sarasota From Russia With Love” – was back in shape and enjoying life again without all the responsibility.
We don’t know if Miley was ever bred again – after all, 18 puppies might do a number on a dog’s body. But we do know that she was a champ the whole way through her first birth!
Just look at this SuperDog!
Of course, it probably helped everyone that the puppies were so incredibly cute.
The families were planning to have a reunion of all the siblings in 2018, and you can click here to see how adorable they were at 6 months old.
