Dog being hailed as hero after swimming through floodwaters to keep autistic boy afloat
Last month, a series of flash floods swept across Tennessee, leaving at least 22 people dead and others missing.
Cooper, a six-year-old Great Pyrenees-Labrador mix, was among the many that got swept into the floodwater. Everyone was unprepared, and everything happened so fast. People and pets had gone missing, houses were being crushed, and cars were being swept away.
There was no time to make sense of what was happening.
Cooper must have felt scared as he was washed away during the flash flood, but that didn’t stop him from caring. In fact, Cooper is now viral for being a local hero who helped a little boy with autism.
Both the little boy and Cooper were swept by the floodwaters. The little boy was able to grab and hold onto a wall. Cooper would have been able to swim, but he chose to stay with the little boy.
When the both of them were found, the loving dog was seen snuggling the little boy – seemingly to calm him. That little boy was also very brave.
Can you imagine how scary it could be for a little boy to be in this situation? One wrong move and the boy wouldn’t make it. The tension and the emotions must have been too much for him as well. Cooper being there helped the boy to remain calm and strong.
The local authorities were able to rescue Cooper and the little boy on time. With the use of rescue boats, both of them were saved from the flash flood.
Zeneta Warren, the witness to Cooper’s selfless act of love and courage, was posted on a Facebook group named Concerned Citizens of Humphreys County.
“Looking for owners. The boaters pulled him out of the creek and brought him to the Waverly plaza. He is safe and is at the Waverly Animal clinic. The Waverly Animal Clinic stayed open for lost and found animals,” Zeneta posted.
Both the little boy and Cooper were saved and were checked by the medical staff. Cooper had a small scrape on his back area, but other than that, he’s still friendly and even had the energy to play around with the clinic staff.
‘We’ve been calling him Big Hero Dog all week long,’ veterinarian Dr. Jessica Peek, owner of the Waverly Animal Clinic. ‘He’s a living sweety and we’ve been giving him lots of treats, telling him he’s a hero,’ she told in her interview with DailyMail.

A woman by the name of Caitlyn Rochelle responded to Zeneta’s Facebook post. There, she said that she was Cooper’s owner.
To which Zeneta replied:
“He has a bit of a story behind him told to me by a young autistic man who was on the boat with him. He said that when he was hanging onto a pole, the dog came down the creek and managed to swim over to him.”

Warren told Caitlyn how her dog didn’t just survive the harsh floodwaters, he also saved a life!
“He said this dog saved my life, he swam to me and made me hold on. He held on to this baby too until the rescue boat got to them. He is such an awesome, well mannered dog, he deserves steaks and bacons,” Warren continued.
Of course, Caitlyn was thrilled to know how her Cooper was able to save a little boy’s life. Who wouldn’t?

There were other casualties, missing people, investments lost, houses turned to debris, and so much more. All of these were just so heartbreaking, but amidst all of these, there’s one little hope, an inspiring story that will help us see that life goes on. There is always hope.
