Terrified dog hides in a corner as soon as rescuers come near
Based in Cape Town, South Africa, the volunteers at Sidewalk Specials are known for their outreach to the local community. They receive calls all the time about dogs in need of rescue, including dogs that are abused or about to be euthanized at local shelters.
So, when the group heard about a group of dogs scheduled to be euthanized at a local farm, they had to respond.
Saving a group of abused dogs
The non-profit organization stepped in to clear out a local shelter’s euthanasia list. After arriving at the farm, they found the dogs hiding in one of the stalls of the stable.
One of the dogs that was especially scared, named Lemming, was trying to stay invisible in a corner. She seemed afraid about what the rescuers intended to do.
Chances were that Lemming thought they were there to hurt her. This was understandable, judging from her condition. Lemming was starving and had a bad case of mange. No wonder she didn’t trust anyone; it seemed she had been mistreated all of her life. The rescuers, though, were determined to help her.
Getting a checkup
Volunteers with Sidewalk Specials took Lemming to Vet Point to get a checkup. As they waited for the vet to give her a look, they wondered if they would be able to find a home for such a timid and scared dog.
Rescuers had a hard time getting her to the vet and were not quite sure how she would do in a foster home.
Finding Lemming a new home
Fortunately, the organization was able to find a couple willing to take her in and foster her. There she would get the chance at life that she had always wanted. Her foster family realized just how much she had been neglected and abused by the amount of shaking she did.
Regardless of her problems, the couple fell in love with her and decided to adopt her. Lemming was finally loved, and this showed as her personality started to come through. According to her adoptive family, it was almost like she was a different dog. All she needed was a second chance.
Sidewalk Specials
Sidewalk Specials is a purely volunteer and foster-based rescue. As a part of its mission, the organization seeks to rescue dogs off of euthanasia lists and from abusive owners. As a part of their outreach, Sidewalk Specials runs sterilization drives in an attempt to cut down on the number of animals. The hope is that by doing so they can reduce the opportunity for animals to be abused and neglected in the future.
