Rescuer helps shelter dog not knowing dog would give the sweetest “thank you” on the ride home

Dogs come to rely on their owners to take care of them and provide them with companionship. So, when a dog’s owner passes away, it can leave a big void in their life. This was the case for a dog named Regan after she ended up at the animal shelter when her owner died.

Alone, confused, and scared, Regan was able to make a connection with one of the workers at the shelter and thanked her in a special way for saving her.

When 4-year-old Regan ended up at the Goofy Foot Dog Rescue after her owner’s death, she was confused and scared. Kim Mozena Rezac, founder of Goofy Foot Dog Rescue and director of animal welfare for Animal Rescue Corps., spent three days trying to earn the lonely dog’s trust.

“You could tell she was scared and afraid. I would go in and give her treats and sit with her and talk,” Rezac told TODAY. “Our shelter is wonderful, and our volunteers do such a great job with the animals. But I hated for her to be there if she could be curled up on a couch at my house.”

In a video, Regan is shown sitting in the passenger seat of Mozena Rezac’s car. As she sits there, Regan reaches over with her paw and places it on top of Mozena Rezac’s hand. Regan held Mozena Rezac’s hand throughout the drive to her home, a full 2-1/2 hours.

Mozena Rezac was moved by Regan’s reaction and shot the video in an attempt to draw attention to Regan’s plight and hopefully help find her a home. The video of the special moment also touched the hearts of viewers as well, getting millions of views.

“So, this girl’s person died and she found herself homeless,” Mozena Rezac commented on the video of the sweet moment. “She was in our shelter for a couple days and I felt sorry for her so I brought her home. How sweet is she?????”

Following the posting of the video, Regan was welcomed into a loving foster home. Best of all, her foster parents planned on adopting Regan once she was ready. As for Regan’s reaction in the video, Mozena Rezac had this to say.

“I think she felt secure in touching someone familiar. She was so nervous and scared in the shelter, but as soon as she jumped into my car, she seemed so grateful.”
