Brave dog left for dead in dumpster gets the best forever home with loads of love

Chi Chi is a beautiful golden retriever who started her life in a way that most of us couldn’t even imagine.

The first time she opened her eyes in this world, it was already a dreaded place. She was a victim of South Korea’s dog meat market, where dogs were hung upside down, believing this will cause their meat to be extra tender.

These dogs knew nothing about love, food, and kisses. They only knew one thing – pain.

Chi Chi was bound so tightly that the wires damaged her muscles and bones.

After seeing that she was in terrible condition (and was no longer considered as good meat) she was put in a trash bag and was tossed in the dumpster- where she had to wait for her time to leave this world.

What a cruel life for a puppy!

Her story was so horrific that even imagining what she went through will crush anyone’s heart.

It was 2016, when Animal Rescue, Media & Education received a tip from Nabiya Irion Hope Project. NIHP is an animal welfare group that found out that there was a meat farm in South Korea.

That same day, the people from ARME facilitated a raid where they found the poor puppy inside the dumpster.

They immediately took the scared puppy, and what they saw inside that trash bag was indescribable.

She wasn’t even able to stand. Her legs were already rotten from being tied up.

Chi Chi was barely alive, but she was fighting to live.

The first thing that they did was to amputate her legs. It was deemed necessary to remove her legs in order to save her life.

Chi Chi was born a fighter!

Even after surgery, her battle was just starting. She needed lots of therapy and they also fitted her with custom-designed prosthetic legs.

Elizabeth Howell from Arizona was able to watch Chi Chi’s story and she knew this dog was meant to be with her. She loved her the moment she saw her in the video.

For her, this brave dog deserved a loving home, and she was willing to give it to her.

β€œShe stole my heart,” Elizabeth told Today.

A few weeks later, Chi Chi was well enough to travel to Arizona, where she was fitted with her prostheses.

It was a challenge at first, and not to mention a lot of work to be done, but her eyes told everyone that it was okay and that she’ll make it through.

After some time, Chi Chi became playful, and she loved running around, playing with her two brothers and sister. The sweet dog treasured everything she had now with the Howells.

It’s as if she knew that she was rescued.

Chi Chi’s journey didn’t stop there. She was trained to be a therapy dog. She often visits veterans, those in assisted-living facilities, and of course, even her fellow amputees.

She knew she was making a huge impact on these people. Chi Chi knew that she had a purpose.

In September of 2018, Chi Chi even won the 2018 American Humane Hero Dog Award, being the first to win their Therapy Dogs Category.

Sadly, last March of 2018, this brave hero was diagnosed with an aggressive tumor in her nasal cavity. She was brave throughout her journey, but she passed away in February of 2019.
