Friendly dog can’t help but pet the other dogs at the daycare

Many dogs like to show affection. Normally, they show this by licking or jumping up on you. In some cases, as with a dog in Canada, they pet other dogs to get their attention. This tactic seems to have worked for a dog named Ruby.

Ruby, a German short-haired pointer, has become quite the sensation online after a video was posted of her petting other dogs on Instagram. Ruby is a regular at The Den Doggy Daycare in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. Usually accompanying Ruby to the daycare is her brother, Miles.

As soon as Ruby and Miles arrive at the daycare, she commences her paws-on treatment of the other dogs around her, starting with Miles.

“She usually starts with her brother, Miles, and as the other dogs in daycare start to chill out, she will get to work on them as well,” Spencer, a worker at the daycare, told Bored Panda. “Miles doesn’t seem interested in giving pets, just receiving.”

The staff at the daycare think that Ruby started her petting with Miles as a way to get his attention. From there it escalated to other dogs. Fortunately, most of the other dogs see it as her way of playing with them and don’t seem to mind.

When Alanah Lorraine first noticed Ruby’s behavior with her dog, Lexy, she began filming the cute behavior. Before too long, she had compiled quite a few clips of Ruby petting Lexy and the other dogs at the daycare and posted it to TikTok. After it was posted, the video got over 600,000 views.

“I thought it would be adorable,” Lorraine said, “but I never imagined it would go viral.”

The Den Doggy Daycare offers the dogs who come to stay there a free-roam indoor/outdoor area in which to play, and in Ruby’s case, paw the other dogs. According to Spencer, it is the only one of its kind in the area.

“For the last 3 years, we have won the award from the Burlington Post for Best Doggy Daycare. Our staff that work with the dogs are the absolute backbone of our service and are amazing with the dogs; we could never do this without the team we have,” Spencer said.

Why does Ruby pet other dogs?

As for why Ruby does what she does, the answer seems to be pretty simple. Most experts say that the pack animal mentality of a dog makes them want to stay connected to other dogs. In Ruby’s case, she does this is by touching other dogs with her paw.

And while a majority of the dogs at the daycare don’t seem to mind Ruby’s petting, they do seem a little confused by it at first. The reactions that they have are priceless, but they seem to enjoy the petting all the same.
