There’s nothing more devastating for a dog than losing his or her owner. This dog camped out in front of her owner’s final resting place and had a secret.

The dog in this story lives in Serbia. She’s a German Shepherd who greatly loved her owner. Since she was a puppy, he had nurtured her.

But one day, the German Shepherd’s owner got sick. As the days progressed, the owner was able to take his pet on fewer walks. The dog could tell that her owner was deteriorating, and she was always there for him.

Sadly, the owner passed away. He was buried in the cemetery, and the dog attended the burial.

But at the end of the funeral, the dog wouldn’t leave the owner’s grave. At first, the owner’s children tried to shift the dog, but she wasn’t going anywhere.

Eventually, they decided to let the dog stay at the grave. They didn’t much care for the dog, but they decided to check up on her now and then.

The first night after the burial, the owner’s son came to visit the grave and the dog. The dog had done something unusual. Overnight, she had dug out a little den on top of the grave. The animal still wouldn’t leave, so the son took a picture and uploaded it to Facebook.

Millions of people online saw this photo and were amazed at how loyal this dog was to her dead owner. But one viewer noticed something very different in the picture, which prompted her own investigation.

Vesna Mihajloski was the woman who had seen the picture and thought that there might have been more than met the eye. Luckily, the graveyard where the dog was staying was close to her home. So she went to visit her herself.

When Mihajloski arrived at the grave, her suspicions were confirmed. There wasn’t just one dog in the den but many.

Over the course of that first night in the graveyard, the German Shepherd had given birth to a litter of puppies.

So Mihajloski informed the son of the deceased owner on Facebook, but the son didn’t want to take the dog and the puppies in.

The woman decided to look after the dog and the puppies herself. She noticed that the puppies were looking ill, and the mother herself was weak.

Mihajloski was able to nurse the mother dog and the puppies to good health. In no time at all, the woman was able to find forever homes for the puppies. She decided to keep the mother dog, realizing that this was a very loyal and loving animal. The dog would always miss her original owner, but at least she had found someone else who would care for her.

The owner’s son and daughter had essentially abandoned their father’s dog and her puppies just because they were slightly inconvenient.

In the USA, there would be outrage if the owners of a dog decided to just leave the animal in a cemetery. Sadly, some people are able to get away with mistreating dogs and graves because of lax law enforcement in their countries.

That isn’t to say that America has solved its own stray dog problems. Far from it. In fact, current estimates say that 6.5 million companion animals go into shelters in the US a year. Luckily, the overall trend is declining. In 2011, the figure was 7.2 million companion animals in shelters.
