Dog returns to remains of home to look for ‘best friend’ 8 weeks after house burnt down

Christine Marr’s family faced a horrible tragedy. The South Haven, Michigan family had a fire break out in their home.

Christine’s family are lovers of animals.

They had a dog named Chloe, and a pair of cats named Ringer and Smoke.

They also cared for the strays who came by their home. Furry, four-legged friends were welcome to her household.

A fire can change everything.

Expected by no one, the fire destroyed much of their home and nearly took all their pets too.

Chloe had a very, very close call during the fire. She suffocated and was motionless in a room until firefighters rescued her.

She might not have made it had they not revived her with oxygen.

But about Chloe’s two feline best friends?

Well, Smoke didn’t make it.

Her nine lives just couldn’t quite save her from that fire. Chloe didn’t even get to say goodbye. As for Ringer, there was no sign of her.

Given the scale of the damage and what happened to Smoke, the chances were slim that Ringer made it.

Of course, the family had to find some other place to stay in the meantime.

The firefighters had to see if anything was salvageable for the family. Nothing.

And no sign of the cat either.

The odds of Ringer surviving that disaster were tiny, but Christine never lost hope. Maybe Ringer still had a few of those nine lives left?

They returned to the home 2 months later to see the state it was in, and if they could recover anything that the firefighters couldn’t.

Chloe came along, which was for the better as they’d learn later on.

It’s hard when your home goes up in flames. But the best you can do is pick yourself back up and recover.

When they got there, Chloe began acting strange. She seemed to know something they didn’t. But what?

The dog kept it up. She licked and dug at a specific spot on the flooring, or what was left of it. There were still boards lined up and sealing whatever was beneath.

Chloe knew something was there.

Christine and her family brushed it off, and pulled Chloe away from the spot. Yet, she ran back to the same spot, like she was telling them something.

They got the hint and investigated.

What they heard next wasn’t anything they counted on hearing.

They pointed a flashlight into the small hole in the wood, and heard faint meowing underneath. Could it be?

It wouldn’t be smart to get their hopes up. After all, it could just be one of the many stray cats who frequented their home. But it was worth a shot to see which cat it was.

Even if it’s not the cat they were looking for, it was still an animal in need.

Thankfully, they looked.

It was when Christine saw a distinct, faint ring on the cat’s tail that the revelation took her.

That was the ring that Ringer was named for, and he’d been alive in the ruined home for 2 months.

“I shine the flashlight down there and I can hear a cat meowing.”

I was like “I can’t move….I can’t move. This is Ringer, John! This is our cat!” – Christine said to Fox 17

Chloe knew her best friend was alive, and she made dang sure they wouldn’t leave without him.

And to have survived two months without a steady supply of food or water is nothing short of a miracle.

“I’m assuming he was probably eating bugs and spiders and stuff under there.” – Christine said

Ringer was alive, thanks to Chloe.

Though he wasn’t in the best shape. He’d lost half his weight and was malnourished.

Chloe is the best friend we all wish we had. The fact that she knew her best friend was alive, and made sure they’d come back with her, just makes your heart melt.

It’d take a while for Ringer to recover his health and weight back. But he’s alive, and that means a lot to a family that almost lost everything.
